@pavot After many years of using a VPS for almost all my projects I've been moving to PaaS for apps and static site generation for everything else. However, I strongly recommend Johncompanies.com for VPS. They really deliver on their promises of 1) being technically solid and 2) giving excellent from-an-engineer tech support. They also don't make you feel like you're just a tiny cog in their huge machine.I always used their FreeBSD product, but they offer Linux as well.

@pavot first, here's why i have a vps: i run a server at home, but my isp has me behind a nat. it's cheaper to rent a vps to act as a gateway than to pay my isp for a static ip.i use buyvm. here's what i like about it:- it's cheap ($2/month for the cheapest option: 512mb ram, which is plenty for my needs)- i can have a nearby (usa) vps, so low latency- i get unmetered bandwidth- buyvm is tor-friendly (although i'd need more ram than i'm currently paying for to actually run a tor node)

@pavot GleSYS. They're an old Swedish company that's certified according to ISO 14001, an international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system. They use 100% renewable energy and they do a good work with being green for real.https://glesys.com/company/sustainabilityThey're not the cheapest, but you get really good performance.

@pavot was with digital ocean and migrated over to Greenhost in Netherlands last month. 100% renewable energy powered servers. They seem to give a shit about same things i do & contribute to a wider movementhttps://greenhost.net/blog/2018/02/22/making-greenhost-even-greener/

@pavot capsul.org here. They're a small hacker group based in Minnesota. They've been very helpful and kind on the matrix chat. I probably wouldn't use it for anything that wasn't just a personal project... like if I was doing something for a paying customer I'd probably want to use Digital Ocean or one of them. But for running my personal web sites and my xmpp server? Works great and for $5/month for the small vps... that's the right price!
