I feel like falling into the Linux-namespaces hole again.Maybe start with getting all my bash shells into their own namespace and see how that feels

If you also want to research this the command is `unshare`It's terrible, namespaces on Linux are terrible, good luck

Observation one: IPC namespaceunshare -iunshare: unshare failed: Operation not permittedRight.Root exists on Linux, so what we need to do is pretend to be root. We’re the rulers of this castle and we must declare it as ours.unshare -ri-r maps the current user as root% whoamirootRight.

Bind mounts on Linux are a thing but union directories are this weird special thing called UnionFS?

@penny sometimes I think I'm an IT professional who uses Linux every day and then I read a random post on here and realize I have no idea what I'm doing

@abloo If you're doing IT in house and are part of a team, the expectations are lower than you'd think. Being smarter than the av-er-age bear with computers and problem solving are all you need.

@penny oh that’s so weird. Everything in / is owned by nobody, so even though you’re root, you can’t leak out and touch /fooI’ve never really looked into namespaces; only know they’re used by containers. I assumed they were like chroots, but I guess the chroot part is entirely different.

@djsumdog @penny that's because in the namespace your user is marked as uid zero so the actual uid 0 kinda doesn't exist or whatevee

@meeper it feels impossible, there's no way to deal with all the magic authentication checks all over the place. It's the very problem Berkeley introduced to UNIX, privileged system calls for mechanisms instead of files with file permissions
