How many virtual workspaces / desktops do you use in your operating system?I've always pretty much used the default 4 of many distros because I never felt the need for more. However, after I started using Tiling WMs, I really enjoyed having lots of desktops even if I didn't use them. And now 4 feels... small?Less than 4 feels weird though, and 1 downright gives me Windows-like goosebumps.#question #askfedi

@metalune is that in a Tiling WM? When I use AwesomeWM I often peak at about 7.

@kzimmermann Currently I'm having 5 active workspaces (of 10 in total). I think the reason why you're fine with few workspaces on stacking WM but not on tiling WM is that you can collapse (minimize) windows on stacking WM.

@kzimmermann 9 == dwm default tags (workspaces).Using 9 and then -1 for each window with background/no need to focus tasks,1 and +1 for immediate tasks.Populating middle tags for waiting tasks.Minimum 3 tags used, about 6 max.

@kzimmermann I have 8 configured (herbstluftwm): Code, Web, Term, Remote, Files, Orga, Misc, Music - I landed there slowly during my progression through different tiling wms - herbstluftwm feels like home, I guess I'll retire with it

@kzimmermann I guess I'm the odd one out for using just one.For some reason every operating system now includes those 4 you mentioned, and one of the first things I do is delete the other 3, so that I don't accidentally open something there and then get confused when trying to find it.One desktop is enough, if it cannot contain the stuff I'm doing, that means I'm doing too much. Although using a stacking WM probably helps.

@kzimmermann Now I use 8 workspaces - most of them consists of a terminal or/and browser window, but I also have one for Thunderbird, one for RDP via Remmina.I use i3-gaps (fork of i3wm) and have "registered" 12 workspaces in config :blobcatbolb: However normally I use maybe 5

@kzimmermann 6. I was used to 4 before, but later realized that was not enough. The first two are usually reserved by the browser and mail client while the others are for different stuff I'm working on at a particular moment.

@kzimmermann I typically use a workspace for each key application I use regularly and simultaneously in i3, so one for Firefox, another for KeePassXC. About 9 in total. Certain apps will automatically launch in their own workspaces.

@huy_ngo that's about the same as me in Awesome. But you can also minimize windows there too, with Super+n. Perhaps it has to do with me not running many fullscreen applications at a time

@kzimmermann I use isolated workspaces on Gnome. Meaning, if I would switch to another one all apps will open new windows for this workspace. This allows using workspaces on demand for a new activity keeping the state of the previous one. So, the number of workspaces in use varies for me. Most often it's one or two, rarely up to 4.
