       @sqeeezy A further alternative to plywood (which I wouldn't use because it may shed fragments, although you may be able to get it with a special surface) : masonite/MDF.

       @publius Yes, indeed. I have some of that. I think it's the same as what we called hardboard in the UK. Should be fit for purpose if I paint/varnish it.
