@publius mmm...there isn't a problem with I couldn't give a damn: people don't say I could give a damn....but what I personally give a damn about is retaining a connect between usage and meaning. Yes usage changes and there will always be this rift between prescriptive and descriptive grammar, but all I've read from the apologists on this one seem like implausible excuses for sloppiness. THEN I hear the Yoakum line where meaning is cheerfully abandoned in order that the line should scan?

@publius Yes, indeed. I have some of that. I think it's the same as what we called hardboard in the UK. Should be fit for purpose if I paint/varnish it.

Sunday neighbourhood meeting about wild boar pest confused by unplanned arrival of boar hunters. Me in bed w coryza head keeping away from the windows as bullets are scary and agnostic. A friend went to tell them, yeah, but ffs warn us first, and then asked me to send YT link to butchering boar as she's got one to eat. Here they root up the ground for worms, destroy gardens and scare you if you come home late at night with their snorting menacing warnings.

@publius You're not wrong: the US has had quite a few deaths, mostly of hunters, confirming what I've been told here: if you shoot them, don't wound them as that makes them very angry. So far in Europe we've had one in Italy and one in Germany, according to what I've read. It's a global increasing nuisance. Perhaps it's just a matter of time before a porcine version of myxomatosis is developed, with what eventual consequences...

If I could do it all over again, I would have changed from Physics (Nat. Phil.) to Computer Science in 1973 instead of dropping Computer Science because I liked it too much. (doh) #PDP11 ah...If they had had central heating or half-decent duvets in those days I could've slept better and got up in the winter mornings and got to the Physics lectures. If beer and hash had been more expensive.....

@paradroyd I dunno about eee900 but void linux musl runs well on my Acer Aspire One netbook with a busted screen. 4 x USB and 2 x SD slots and it''s my music server and turns off when I tell it, not like my raspberry pi's which need me to get out of my control centre/bed and cut the power.
