@PennyLope Do you have information that this runner doesn’t have hyperandrogenism, but rather a different condition? Or what were you referring to? Not arguing, I would genuinely like to know the details, if they’re out there. I know that in Semenya’s case it seemed to take ages for the actual details to come out. Regardless, their attitude is exactly the same as Semenya’s. They keep winning, fully understand they have a clear advantage, but argue that they should be allowed to keep that advantage because that’s how they were born.

@Gnomeshatecheese Lies by omission, as the testosterone rules they are subject to are only for males with a dsd, even females with hyperandrogenism do not meet that threshold and normally would be disadvantaged by it. That's why he's been barred from other distances.

@PennyLope @Gnomeshatecheese That is what I don't understand. They bar them from some distances, but let them compete in other distances. It makes no sense.

@LuvGreenTea2019 Might be as simple as throwing a bone to both sides in order to keep both happy, or at least to avoid a big mess. @PennyLope

@Gnomeshatecheese @LuvGreenTea2019 I believe the issue is evidence of advantage. In the cloud cuckoo land of sports governance, people don't have eyes or brains so they wait until a bunch of males rob women of their earnings and records, then use this as evidence that, low and behold, these males do have an advantage. So the presence of three males taking the top three spots in the Rio 800m, provided the evidence that these males dominate... but only in the 800m apparently. We now have to wait for the evidence relating to advantage in the shorter and longer distances where these males recently won medals and broke records to be collected and presented.

@PennyLope Does this person have a Y chromosome? Does he/she have ovaries or testicles? Uterus?

@Dingo123 He's believed to be a 46 XY DSD, rather than 46 XX, so very unlikely to have anything like a working uterus and far more likely to have internal testes. Obviously, there's a lot of privacy issues, but again it comes down to the testosterone levels being indicative of a male dsd, not a female one.

@PennyLope @Dingo123 Specifically he (and Semenya, and the guy who won the Diamond League 200m) are thought to have 5ARD.https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/5-alpha-reductase-deficiency/This means they’re male through and through. They have internal testes which produce testosterone to normal male levels, they’ve been through ALL the virilizing effects of male puberty. (You can just about make an “aw, they didn’t know and they were raised and socialised as girls” pity case for the various androgen insensitivity conditions, but this particular one - male, male, male). There’s one part of the Dominican Republic where this genetic disorder is so common that it even has a local name: guevedoces (literally “penis at twelve”).It becomes unambigiously apparent at puberty that these are in fact men.

@Gnomeshatecheese @PennyLope The crucial thing to remember is that female hyperandrogenism doesn’t take an XX individual into the male range for testosterone.https://twitter.com/fondofbeetles/status/1219664506625888257The normal male range is anything between 10 and 30 nmoles/ litre blood testosterone. For “normal” women it’s one. For women with PCOS it might reach 2. By the time you’re up to, say, 5, you can be pretty damn sure that the individual you’re looking at has an XY DSD (possibly partial or complete androgen insensitivy). Niyonsaba and pals have 5ARD (see my other post), so their blood testosterone is firmly in the male range of 10 to 30 (the insistence that Semeya used androgen blockers lowered his testosterone below the magic 10, but nowhere near the female range).Almost all the press coverage is built around lying by omission to give the impression that they are suffering XX DSDs with unusually raised T levels for a woman, when in fact they have XY DSDs with totally normal T levels for a man.And (further lying by omission), we’re continually fed the impression that T distributions for the two sexes overlap the way, say, height does. In fact they are pretty much disjoint distributions.

@EmmyNoether @Gnomeshatecheese @PennyLope Excellent post....It's just not testosterone. It's male skeletal structure, different shaped pelvis, etc. Biological differences between males and femalesa, Larger lungs and denser alveoli in the lungs, enabling fasteroxygen uptake;b. Larger hearts and per-stroke pumping volume, and morehemoglobin per unit of blood, all enabling higher short-term andsustained levels of oxygen transport to the muscles;c. An increased number of muscle fibers and increased musclemass (for example, men have 75%-100% greater cross-sectionalarea of upper arm muscle than do comparably fit women, whilewomen have 60-70% less trunk and lower body strength thancomparably fit men);d. Higher myoglobin concentration within muscle fibers, enablingfaster transfer and “cellular respiration” of oxygen within themuscle to unleash power;e. Larger bones, enabling the attachment of greater volumes ofmuscle fiber;f. Longer bones, enabling greater mechanical leverage thusenabling males to unleash more power, e.g., in vertical jumps;g. Increased mineral density in bones resulting in stronger bones, providing superior protection against both stress fractures andfractures from collisions;h. And, of course, U.S. adult males are on average 5 inches tallerthan U.S. adult women

@Gnomeshatecheese *I'm on a new phone and not everything has transferacross. There's a good graph out there somewhere that shows the female vs male testosterone range and where the likes of the male intersex athletes sit on that. Basically, without intervention there's no overlap and even with intervention these male athletes only lower to a range that a female athlete would be dope tested for (ie. Unnaturally high).
