General announcement: If anyone wants to text me privately, I'm now "brendankidwell" on Telegram.I tried to sign up for Signal today. Not only does Signal require SMS; it appears to implicitly require SMS access on the Android or IOS device you are required to use to sign up with their native app. If your only SMS device is a flip phone with no Android and no IOS, you are denied access. Das' racis'.

For Telegram access (after sign-up was successful) I'm using telegram-purple → libpurple → BitlBee IRC bridge → Quassel IRC client. I have one single IRC/texting client on my private server, and I can access that client remotely from all my desktops and handhelds.

@progo interesting... I just saw that Matrix has a library for this as well -- albeit in alpha stage https://matrix.org/docs/projects/client/purple-matrix

@Pendragon Matrix looks overly-complicated for my needs, and I haven't had to install it. but it's good to know they're working on supporting libpurple plugins. The existing libpurple plugins neatly solve lots of "but I don't want to lose access to this one service" problems.

@progo psst. This is sort of a Signal fork that doesn't use SMS and supports a federated server architecture.https://getsession.org/

@Pendragon @progo it took me a couple days tinkering with the majority of the time being me setting up the Jail properly on FreeBSD because I like being able to segment apps for simpler backups and upgrades. The main benefit are the superior clients. I can video call people from my iPhone or computer to their droid.

@51rH0n3y84d93r @Pendragon My needs are different; I casually text chat with whoever will talk to me, all day. I talk to people on IRC and people on other systems that I can bridge into IRC. I schedule phone calls.Quassel works great for me on whatever is my current computer, always ready in the background.I'll admit of course that running libpurple in BitlBee and connecting to that from Quassel Core isn't exactly simple. It works for me.
