i don't understand butches (or any other lesbians) who actually LIKE the smell of "mens" soap/deodorant/etc. putting that stuff on the shelves was part of one of my old jobs and i HATED the smell of these products even when they were in their packaging, just like i hate the smell of them on a man mixed with their existing man smell. idk what any of them would be like on a woman but. i just can't imagine that it's any goodand MAN body washes always have names like SWAGGER or peace and like what does that even mean?? meanwhile womens products are like. things that exist. like cucumber like that actually feels non-gendered. and there are womens body washes that are really feminine, and some that are more neutral, but really none of the mens ones lean neutral they're all grey and red with a grip part on it and FOR MEN ykno. then also you have like head & shoulders and lever 2000 which are like the most neutral to me but anyway that job was like 5 years ago so. I'm not looking that closely any more and I just buy independently made "natural" shit (which feels neutral but... if it's not grey and named Turbocharger: FOR MEN" it's definitely for women yknoooo)

@k181 Fragrances are for men or for women because they are marketed that way. There are specific scents I don't like but it is because I dislike the scent in itself not because it is for men or for women.

@SphinxSister My favorite fragrance is typically a men’s one, but I do overall tend not the kinds of fragrances labeled for men. They’re usually too strong. @k181

@starsstorm @k181 That is why I like some of them. They tend to last longer than subtler fragrances marketed at women. In a country where summer temperatures surpass 40 degrees celsius I want something that will help me smell good for as long as possible.

@starsstorm @k181 I see this the same as with clothing. My mother dislikes me wearing what she calls men's shirts ( the warm checked flannel sort). The last quarrel we had, I said "I am a woman, I am buying this, paying it for it and wearing it. It belongs to me so it is now a woman's shirt ." She has not commented again since.

@SphinxSister @k181 @starsstorm What I don't understand is why this is made a lesbian issue, why is it to do with lesbians only?Women like fragrances of all sorts, whether they are male or female 'gendered' and marketed as such. The packaging isn't appealing and smacks of stereotypes, but the stereotypes are still strong and working!I really didn't think people cared so much anymore about male -v- female, and gendered items.

@xzy45 @SphinxSister @starsstorm im just thinking about this from a lesbian point of view because i am one LOL and if a product is going to be scented i would prefer that it is based off something natural rather than some weird chemical motor oil thing... it was my experience working in a store that sold a lot of personal care products that "mens" products scents were unpleasant and also due to being gay i feel like men smell unpleasant whether they've showered recently or not (unfortunately in my line of work sometimes they do not shower as often as they should)

@k181 @xzy45 @starsstorm That's 2 different things though isn't it? Not liking how men smell may be because you are lesbian. I don't see how some products can smell unpleasant because they are marketed at men though. If somebody changed the packaging and marketed them at women they would still smell the same wouldn't they?

@SphinxSister @starsstorm @xzy45 there’s just such a serious divide between the products aimed at women vs the products aimed at men. “women’s” products are typically just themed after plants and no marketer has to remind women to keep up personal hygiene, but men’s products need to reassure men that YES, showering can be manly IF you use POWER body wash. (which smelled bad to me even just putting the bottles on the shelf in the store). maybe it’s changed now, but I don’t remember any “women’s” products that were themed around weird abstract concepts like that

@k181 @SphinxSister @starsstorm @xzy45 Remember Virginia Slims? Those cigarettes were supposed to make us liberated. Since they were the only menthols available in Japan and Thailand, I smoked them for like 10 yrs! Some liberation.

@SphinxSister @k181 I can understand that. For me it’s sensory and I sometimes get migraines from them.

@starsstorm @k181 I know that some people do. When I still worked at the office I used to avoid using the stronger scents there because I had a colleague who got migraines from strong scents too. Again the issue was that the scents are strong not that something makes them "for men."

@SphinxSister @starsstorm @k181 Some perfumes give me headaches. I think it's more a case of are the components artificial instead of natural. There are old classic perfumes that I like, and a lot of new ones that either just smell weird or give me a headache. In particular, the Estee Lauder fragrances I have checked out are heavy and synthetic. Back when we had department stores, I would hit the perfume counter, pick up a tester bottle, spray a bit in the air, and then lean over and smell the air. Some of them would give me an instant headache when I sniffed the tester. NOPE! I like soft florals and House of Guerlain. I will wear heavy orientals in the winter, not in the summer.

@k181 All that Axe stuff is nasty. I don't like the ingredients they put in men's colognes to give them an edge, like tobacco (REALLY popular now, and as an ex smoker, I gag on it), leather, camphor, and benzoin, and "burnt" woods. And men's fragrances are all loaded with musk, which I find disgusting. But I LOVE woodsy scents. Anything with balsam, amber, oud, cedar, etc. is heavenly to me. I like to switch between Folsom & Roarke's "Ramble" fragrance, a men's solid cologne which smells like a forest, and Ysatis by Givenchy, a very sweet and feminine floral scent.
