Dusting off my 14 year old Nikon P5000 point-and-shoot on today's morning walk.

The autofocus on the P5000 is truly dreadful. It sometime snever focuses. Did I really enjoy this camera in its day, or did I endure its foibles?Slowly finding little settings that improve this, but it still takes several seconds before it agrees to snap the shutter.

@withaveeay My first ever digital camera was a Nikon Coolpix 990. It was a great camera in its day. I don't remember ever having a problem with autofocus, although my expectations were probably less than now.

@fitheach @withaveeay My Coolpix P900 has trouble focussing when trying to photograph birds in trees if there is the thinnest of twigs near the front of the subject and manual focus takes too long for most wildlife photography. Other than that, I like it.

@wizardofosmium 83x zoom, good grief! Holding it steady at that magnification would be difficult, too.I've suffered from the "focusing on a twig" problem, it just happens sometimes.I've never found that autofucus for flowers works. I always use the 10x focus assist, and set the focus manually. @withaveeay

@fitheachI have a steady hand, One of my favourite pictures was of the waterfall in Smoo Cave in the 1980s, a 4 second exposure holding the camera balanced on a fence.@withaveeay

@fitheach Maybe it was just the P5000. I think Nikon was trying to find new markets, and the engineers were over-ruled by the marketeers; it came to the market before it was ready.

@withaveeay A common problem. Perhaps you can still use the camera for certain purposes. Long-distance landscapes perhaps?

@withaveeay I like to keep using things for as long as they still work.

@fitheach Yes. That's my excuse for never wanting to throw things out! It's also why I have two Asus eeepc's running Debian in a box. The batteries last for as long as 20 minutes these days...

@withaveeay I have an old HP NC4200, which I use as a home server. It is fairly energy efficient, has an integrated screen, and the battery (built-in UPS) still lasts for about 5 hours.
