The more I think about software, the more I come to realise pretty much every development I actively enjoy working with is pre-2000...

@neauoire oh, I don’t so much mean the process of development (I also didn’t start until mid-2010s at least). But in terms of technologies/formats, things like XML, PDF, lots of font-related stuff like SFNT and PostScript are all 90s or earlier.

@neauoire I can’t think of an equivalent format or language (maybe with the exception of Markdown) post-y2k that I don’t end up thinking of as basically a necessary annoyance.

@neauoire @rutherford JSON is also a massive one. I personally hate XML with a passion.

@welt @neauoire Huh, I’m interested to know why that is. I use it fairly often (constantly if you consider HTML to be XML) — wouldn’t consider it a favourite, but I never mind having to write/read it

@rutherford @neauoire I find it very difficult to read and just to be too complex for its own good. 99.999999999999999 percent of the time JSON is perfectly fine and more readable. Writing a JSON parser is way easier than writing an XML parser if I ever need to. I'm sure there's probably some good use-cases for XML but it isn't worth it in basically every situation for me. I think even then we could do better.

@neauoire okay, well-formatted csv (2005), touché, I stand corrected.Badly-formatted csv I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy
