Does anyone know of a good general news source with a subscription model and a mobile app that doesn't hard-require Google Services? I like The Guardian but they're a bit more expensive than I'm comfortable with, considering that I can't sign in from the mobile app and would be bound to the website.

@amolith >subscription modelAssuming it means what I think it does, won't RSS do?

@vyivel I mean subscription as in monthly payment :meowLul: LWN would be exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for if it was more general. The Guardian: Tech with a working mobile app for $10/mo would be noice but I can't find anything similar

@amolith I am happily paying 2€ per month for a student subscription at @nytimes. I am very satisfied with it.

Neither does BBC but the Calibre recipe uses the links in those feeds to fetch full articles and they have a dedicated Tech feed in addition to the others :akko_fingerguns:

This is a pretty nice way to read the news tbh. Nice and clean PDF with navigation links everywhere :comfy: I might start posting one every morning or something :akko_think2:

@amolith Wow, that's the nicest experience I've had reading news on a computer. I prefer a real newspaper, but still that's so much better than websites which overshadow the content they're supposed to serve,

@smpl It's probably been over 10 years since I held a real newspaper :akko_giggle: With my Calibre setup, it automatically fetches the news every morning at 6, turns it into an Epub/PDF, then sends it to my ereader as soon as I connect it so I can look at the news on an eink display :blobfoxcomfymelthappy:

@amolith How do I go about setting up calibre for something like that?
