Question: how do we bring optimism back to technology? I want to get excited about tech not worry about how it will be used to control or punish us for wrong think. I think in the open source world there is some but as soon as large corporations got involved we got deep state psyops like trans / lgbt and ‘anti-racism’ and other shit that is detrimental to absolutely ‘results based’ activities like programming and other computer science fields.Reasonable people don’t care what your race or gender is if you’re good at what you do. The fact ‘they’ (large corporations / USA deep state) injected all this intersectional bullshit into tech really hurts and it’s eventually going to lead to china eating our lunch. I just want to be optimistic about the whole thing again vs wanting to disappear off the grid.

See extreme example Coraline Ada Ehmke, who first came to most people’s attention in a drive by shooting of a complete obscure piece of Ruby (programming language) software. That was before it was hired by GitHub, and then showing it generally can’t keep a job for more than a year if I remember correctly.How about the concept of “auto-conspiracies?” You don’t need a specific controlling entity or sector conspiring in cowled robes in a dark cave when you have large groups of like minded people who coordinate in an organic manner. That’s almost certainly more frightening a concept, but is what I see happening.That said, codes of conduct have been used by small companies to damage the completion.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @crisp It isn't just that. I'm friends with a few Google engineers, and the way Google does business... It discourages independence, critical thinking- they have an ungodly amount of compute, and for a lot of problems they just throw power at things more than anything else. There's a specific "Google Mindset" that's starting to seep into the people I know who work there.Plus, yeah, probably shouldn't be devoting 150 IQ players to maintaining mail apps, but I can't speak to how well they allocate their human capital.
