@tangleofsnakes I was listening to an interview with Helen Joyce yesterday and the interviewer asked my favourite question, 'what was the most surprising thing you learned in your research?' and her answer was how just plain dumb TRA arguments are--and how otherwise reasonably intelligent educated sophisticated people just completely lose the ability to think with respect to this one issue. She went in with an open mind, looking for arguments and ideas and evidence, but 'it was all nonsense.'

@DoctorDee @tangleofsnakes these responses are so freaking stupid. Females are the the sex that carries the child. That fact in NO WAY indicates nor obligates EVERY female to do so. They know this. They damn well know it. They know exactly what is meant. But there are men determined to not be “feminine men” and women told they cannot be “masculine women” and both that don’t feel especially masculine or feminine but think we are obligated to pick one (fun fact: we aren’t) so they try to act like they have no clue wtf sex is. They know this and just pretend they don’t. It’s childish…actually no because children understand it just fine. It’s ridiculous and a damn farce. Have all the damn likes/dislikes/characteristics/traits that are stereotypically gendered to masculine or feminine all you damn want. Quantify it to last penny if you want. None of that makes someone a man or woman. None of it is how you are defined as a male or female. Males and females may “tend” towards things that have been gendered to the same term (male-masculine, female-feminine) but they are generalizations and shift and move and not damn laws. There is no tipping point where if I have too many masculine traits that my sex falls off and boop I’m non-binary…lean further to masculine and boop I’m a man. Omfg they know this. We all fucking know this. How damn hard is it for them to just accept people without forcing a damn ‘gender box’ to fit? Shred the box and the million little micro labels.

@Flick There is a stage in the maturation of a person, when they think they Know Everything and Have Figured Out Everything (cough teenagers cough). It seems to me that those in that particular stage are also vulnerable for simplistic nonsense delivered in the form of handy-dandy, superficially appealing sound bites. @GnomeshatecheeseVery true. Unless you’re taught (self-, at school, or by other adults in your life) how to think critically, you will be stuck at that stage. There’s a type of working class white english (mostly) male, to stereotype wildly, that is stuck in that stage. “Never had any use for school, university of life, got a proper job working with my hands”, etc. Making a virtue of it out of necessity means pride stops them from admitting (even to themselves) that it might not actually have been the best life path for them. Wild tangent: when did that stereotype take over from the going to night school, “the kids must finish school” one that used to be more prevalent? Even when I was extremely young stupidityannoyed the shit out of me!So many of the men had been POW after St Valery and as a result,plus things like clearances and the land raids after WW1, made themmake damn sure we stood up and faced the wind and did not bend.

@MaureenZYZ Well, I just happened to listen to a video by James Lindsey, where he’s talking about how Critical Theory (remember, this includes Queer Theory) is managing to run ahead of Good Liberals and make all these gains. Basically he’s saying that while the GL are busy arguing the ideas of the Theory and want to rely on the “marketplace of ideas” to sort things out, the CT-people are applying “praxis”, which essentially means putting their ideas into practice and evangelising (this would also no doubt appeal to the immature people I mentioned). And that in fact CT doesn’t really care about the ideas themselves, but about the “praxis”. Lindsey’s opinion is that the best way of fighting this is to stop them at the practical level, and not attempt to fight them with ideas. Which is, incidentally, what the women’s lobby is doing right now. At least in the places where it manages to be most effective. Convergence, again. @Flick @HebrideanHecate @tangleofsnakes

@MaureenZYZ As to how to open up ways for people to mature, that’s harder. I expect many never will.But I suspect a good start would be if the society just told these people “no”. No, we won’t entertain your nonsense. No, we won’t bend over backwards for you. No, you’ll have to make your own way in the world like we did. No, you’re going to have to learn to deal with the world not coddling your emotions, like the rest of us did. Then these people would have a genuine choice, to either remain in their arrested state and have world ignore their tantrums, or to mature and claim their place among the sensible adults. I think a lot of people are starting to realise the problem that come with humouring mental toddlers or teenagers, and are becoming less and less willing to play along.
