In your ideal world, how would surveillance be handled? If you're not familiar with Sousveillance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SousveillanceBasically, it's individuals doing their own "surveillance". The new word is needed because the word surveillance is loaded with an implication of centralized authority.

Oh, also to clarify, just pick the position that's closest to yours. I obviously can't add every possibility with just 4 choices. For instance, "Surveillance by trusted entity" doesn't automatically imply a total lack of private spaces, nor does it necessarily imply a single ultra-powerful trusted entity. Also, this poll doesn't imply that we are simply slapping whatever you pick into the current system, though you also shouldn't just assume an incorruptible system either.

@urusan My first thoutht is that it should be handled by the owner of surveilled space. In public space, where we all are owners, we all must be able to decide whether and to what extent (video, face recognition, sound) our shared space is monitored. Ideally on municipal or even smaller level. And if none is chosen, it must be banned for all institutions.

@urusan My main thought is that 'shared' surveillance is the most natural use case in possible futures where large populations don't have self-contained bodies but still have an interest in Meatspace.Though perhaps with an audit log of who views what, when, and why.

@Azure An audit log would naturally go along with everyone knowing everything.Though I suppose that it's not guaranteed if private spaces and private communication still exist (that is, the shared surveillance is only for public spaces). So you couldn't see what people are getting up to with all the public information. An audit log would plug some of the potential holes (ex. investigations into crimes could look at who was excessively interested in nearby equipment).

@urusan not my ideal, but feels like sousveillance is the direction the wind is blowing. There are those who want to be overlords with eyes in the sky, but far more common are security and phone cameras. These days, if it happens near a crowd, there may be a video of it, and if so that video is *definitely* going on the internet. Live always-on cameras may happen someday, I suspect when they try glasses phones again.
