Would a stuck up euro-artsy-cinema fan like yours truly find anything worthwhile in Star Wars? I know it's some anticolonialist/anticapitalist bits, but it's also the most capitalist movie franchise ever afaict. But it's also such a huge part of pop culture I feel like I should watch it just to be able communicate sometimes...

@cadadr I still like the original trilogy, but the enfranchisement of the series led to increasingly uneven and hamfisted writing, and the depictions of good and evil just get dumber and dumber.I feel like the originals just kind of happened to be good on accident, and nobody involved in the production truly understood what made the original stuff good at all.Ironically, the extended universe stuff that exists in comic books, video games, and the endless amount of toys themselves are actually pretty awesome. But the source material is largely trash.

@cadadr Saw the Star Wars movie only a couple of years ago -- "because like, come on, who hasn't seen them?" -- and found them disappointing. Not sure what I was expecting, but it's really pulpy pop. Not even great storytelling of cinematography or anything, just piled on cliche's. The only reason I'd watch them now is to make a critical analysis of popular cinema and culture.

@EFLS @cadadr I believe in 1979 it was ok storytelling, good cinematography and amazing special effects. In terms of clichés it looks cliché now because Star Wars was the first to steal them.
