The fact that throughout western history women have changed their names to that of their husbands makes it so difficult to find out your family tree exclusive to women. Like for men it’s easy as pie to travel their history because the husband is the “default,” the one who remains at the forefront of the family line. For women, we have changed names so many times through the journey of the family tree that it’s so complex to trace. That seems very wrong to me. I won’t be changing my name, should I ever marry. Not just because I want women to be the default center of the lineage, but also because my name is... my name. Why should I change it? Why should I take on another name that is not historically my own? No. That will not happen. I won’t.

@ndkaldjen No offence, but if your family name came from your father anyway...?

@ndkaldjen Depends on where they are. In France and Québec, women's legal names remain their names at birth and were usually recorded which makes tracing both sides of a family tree much easier.

@Fullycaffeinated yeah and I know in Hispanic cultures they retain their names and build upon them over time (hence a lot of hispanic people have super long names, I kinda like that.)

@ndkaldjen I like my name combo. My parents deliberately chose first names that work well with my last name, and the aesthetics of that please me. I’ve joked that the only way I would ever change my name is if I got a chance to marry a titled Mr. Macbeth and thus could become Lady Macbeth, but that was never going to happen.Anyway, I couldn’t possibly take my spouse’s name even if we married, as the end result would be horrendous. It would be like combining neon polka-dots with … animal print. Utter clash.

In the scope of reproduction, it is the woman who passes on the most to the child. Cell differentiation factors, mitochondrial DNA, and sustenance for embryonic survival pre-implantation. Meanwhile, men contribute the bare minimum. The other half of genetic material, plus nothing else. Then, the woman gestates the child for nine months, and takes on the role of raising the child, nearly exclusively in the first few years of the child’s life. It is women who give the most to their children, children who are still considered by society to be belongings of the father. And the mother, nothing more than an incubator for the man’s progeny. A slave with his name on her. Fuck that. Fuck that shit. Nah, that won’t be me. I swear it.

@ArtistBristol of course, but it has always belonged to me in my lifetime. Far different from changing it halfway through my life if I were to marry. My name may have belonged to my dad but it’s also always been my name. Get it?

@ndkaldjen This doesn't happen in Spain and insofar as I know it never has. Everybody has two surnames, their father's first, then their mother's and keeps them throughout their life.
