despite being a modern american high schooler, i’ve avoided widely accepted social media like instagram, facebook, etc. but now with college coming up, i don’t know how i’m going to remain in contact with everyone without it. until the fediverse serves my needs completely, i might have to give in for a while :(

@Spaceface16518 I wasn't very aware of privacy concerns in high school, but somehow I didn't like facebook and didn't have an account on any social media. All I had was Skype to play with friends. After I graduated I went to that very hard Math school (I don't know the equivalent in the US) and being on the facebook group to share exercises and being helped became mandatory. That's when I got caught into the facebook machine, and it took me some 5 years before deleting my account.

@Spaceface16518 But when I finally muster the courage to delete it (after not having used for a year or so) I was surprised at how easy it was. There was no aftermath. Yes I may have "lost" contact with some people there, but let's be honest: I wasn't talking to those people anymore.Anyway, what I'm saying is: As much as we love to be zealots in the free culture movement, sometimes, compromises aren't a sacrifice.

@Spaceface16518 You can keep your usage of those platforms restricted to only what you need and maybe even suggest alternatives there. Who knows, some of your classmates might be more open than you think!
