Never had a endoscopy/colonoscopy before. Tomorrow I lose that cherry (TMI?) at my neighborhood hospital.So grateful for the invention of general anesthesia because I don't want to be there for this ("Find a happy place, Stevie!").This had better be worth the $14 hard out of pocket cashola I had to dig deep and pony up for it, that's all I have to say. Already blew $7 on the blood work and ECG.Do you know much cake I can make with $21?Don't even get me started on waisted(sic) cake.

@StevenDouglas Sounds like you have great insurance.General anesthesia will work in your and the doctor's/staff's favor.Unasked for advice: tell the surgeon beforehand to be sure and get all the way through to the end (where the appendix is). Mine did not, because I had had no general anesthesia just a twilight experience, and I'm told I was screaming, so they stopped short. The cancer found a few years later was near the appendix.Have a great time, and best wishes.

@StevenDouglas Been there, did that. All I remember is the attendant asking me to hand her my glasses and complementing me on how fashionable they were. Next thing I knew, I was looking at the ceiling tiles in recovery. You got this. The prep is worse than the actual procedure.

And if you shop around (or have a doctor that doesn’t “do” insurance), you can get an MRI with reading fee included for about $350.It takes some searching, but independent medical practitioners do exist. They operate outside the constraints of large medical conglomerates and their prices reflect that.

No tangled monster web of HMOs in Vietnam.There are "FOREIGNER HOSPITALS" here - for those who feel more at home with things truly rammed up their butts.And fortunately for me, I'm no dour-faced expat. They create hard times for themselves.Nobody gives me a hard time in this country. I'm VERY at home, relaxed and happy around Vietnamese people, so it's pretty much a pleasant experience for me everywhere I go.

And by that I'm talking about western medical care that treats everything like hallowed halls. This ever-PACKED place LOOKS like a long wait. NOT SO. They are incredibly efficient, and turnover is FAST. Well-oiled machine.Most of those "hundreds" are processed and gone within an hour as others take their place.That means the doctors here have seen EVERYTHING. Loads of experience.

@StevenDouglas Had endoscopy about seven times as had a tumour in stomach removed and so still have check-ups. I have never had any after effects at all to that procedure, in fact it is a short nap which I thoroughly enjoy. Colonoscopy was painless, but the night before a little unpleasant, not least the drink which was yuk imo. Some colicky cramps after procedure but soon gone. Today's technology is such a wonderful help. I hope that your results are top notch!

@StevenDouglas I've had both several times (the perks of Crohn's Disease). You'll do fine. It's really the best sleep you've ever had.You may have a slight sore throat from the endoscopy, but, thankfully, the pooper-tube has no after effects.

@StevenDouglas The first one I had was without anesthesia. They got the scope up to about the splenic flexure and the scope didn't want to make the turn from the descending colon to the transverse colon. I was in pain, my O2 sats were dropping, and they're yelling at me to breathe! Stop and I'll breathe!!! It really isn't a big deal and you otherwise don't really feel it. Afterwards though, because of the air they insufflate the colon with, they make you fart a lot to help dispel the air! 🤣

@StevenDouglas Due to some serious health issues I’ve been having I had both at 38 yrs old last Wednesday. The worst part was being stuck and my veins dug around in 4 times before they got the IV started. The rest was easy and they use CO2 now to inflate the intestines and that absorbs better so less bloating etc. Good luck sir!

There is also an air cable to insufflate the colon, to make it easier for the doc to see. The doc has a knob on the handpiece of said scope that allows him to bend the scope for maximum viewing ease and maneuverability.Wait...what the hell? Yeah, it's just a stick up your arse! 🤣

@StevenDouglas If it’s any consolation, the diagnosis of “suspicious” nodules removed during the procedure means that “we got the POTENTIAL nasties” and you’re good to go. If anything does come back from the biopsies, the worst thing you’ll have to do is inform your direct relatives that you had a “suspicious” colonoscopy result. I got one of those notifications from my brother a couple of months ago. What it means is that I can’t do the mail-order screenings and have to do the real deal. 😑

"When you hear hoofbeats look for horses" but sometimes it's a zebra. Took over 10 years before a new doctor fresh out of internship recognized what it was. He got all excited because he thought he would never see a case, even though he learned about it in school. Kids. Brilliant kids.

This sounds like a multi step version of a standard single step colonoscopy done here in American hospitals.Here a gastroenterologist performs one as an outpatient procedure. They insert scope, surgically remove any polyps found & send them to a lab for cancer screening.Almost everybody has polyps removed during their first colonoscopy. We even get a report with color pics from the endoscopic camera. (Pics make great add to family xmas card 😂).

BIOPSY UPDATE:Results inconclusive, they want more tests. I called in a big gun, a former student of mine who is a director at Cho Ray Hospital - same one the President of Vietnam goes to for any big problems. She knows EVERYONE and helped my son get through open heart surgery (LONG story) here almost two years ago. I've contacted her, she's rallying support now. I'll be seeing her with a doctor tomorrow morning to map out a plan. A two week hospital stay is likely in my near future.

I have to say that I have a lot of sympathy for her because I'm terrified of doctors (after they didn't catch the problem, and I almost died). But it is also important to be there for you. I hope she has good girlfriends to lean on, so she can show you game face. That's what I do when I'm overwhelmed. Don't know what I'd do without my girls. We will all pray, just know you're very loved and appreciated.

Guess I'll just assume they're going to remove it, since that's what they generally do, and then probably biopsy the shit out of it while you're still under anesthesia, and maybe remove a little more if it's STILL inconclusive. But, my experience is that fentanyl is something to look forward to, so at least there's that!

@StevenDouglas Big hugs Steven. When my daughter was 2 years old she had a health crisis that took 6 months to diagnose. When they finally did a colon exploration the doctor found the biggest polyp he had ever seen in a human. It took hours of surgery to figure out how just to remove it, but once it was gone she never had an issue again. May it be the same for you my friend.

UPDATE:I check into the local hospital on Monday, likely for a month, not two weeks.I was at the emergency room this morning with severe pain.ER staff did a thorough and efficient triage. I got a nice pain killer shot in the butt and medication for pain, inflammation and bloating."You don't worry about a thing, and don't think about cancer or anything like that. This tumor at your age is 80% likely cancer but no matter, it must come out anyway and we test it after that."Looking good.

@StevenDouglas 🙏 cancer is not as scary as it used to be. There are treatments now for even stage four cancers that never existed a few years ago. It's definitely not "fun" and I wish you the best outcome.

@StevenDouglas I k ow this is anecdotal, but here goes anyway. My granddaughter had vomiting, bloating, severe pain. Couldn’t eat for months. Gastro said reflux, food allergies, etc., etc. finally had to go to emergency room 3 times and they sent her home. Finally the hospital started looking and found a grapefruit sized fatty tumor in her colon. She’s lost 35 lbs by this time. They operated and she was in the hospital for 4 days. This was 18 months ago. Her and hubs just had Blayke below.

@Wyatt45 No, fatty tumor was my lay diagnosis. When I looked at tons of images of "polyps" they looked the same. When I looked at images of cancerous polyps, not much changed! So what do I know. It will be interesting to know for sure either way.

He's absolutely committed to following treatment plans and being positive. He's missing a few parts, but he gets up each day and keeps working at survival. And he put his trust in Christ, to my delight.I pray for you that it's not cancer, but, no matter what, God is good, and each day is a day to celebrate.

UPDATE:Looks like calling in the "big gun" backfired on me. Doctor: "Why is the director from Cho Ray Hospital calling my boss? Who is your husband? Everyone's talking about him now."Wife: "No, he was just her teacher."Now they're dotting all i's, crossing all t's, and probably wish I wasn't here.And I got another stick up ass from a specialist today. He got past everything, saw everything, and did another biopsy. So, check-in delayed. Results and more scheduling tomorrow at 2pm.

@StevenDouglas @MMA As an auditor, I say yes, if the risks are high. If risks are low, then no. For your case, you have risk factors that are significantly high enough to warrant further testwork. It's tedious, but the reason an audit goes deeper is to pinpoint problems so they can be corrected, proper controls placed, and an action plan developed to mitigate future risks. It's true for financials, for performance, or for medical. And, I admit, annoying as hell in all areas.

@StevenDouglas @MadBeachBimbo @KathrynK @StevenDouglas In 2009 I went to doc in pain, was sent for tests, told I had a fatty tumor the size of a lemon that needed removed. Turned out the tumor was a cystic teratoma which, while gross, is usually benign. Had to go under the knife because they are filled with poisonous fluid. Once removed, oncologist told me it was the size of a grapefruit. The surgery kicked my arse but it was indeed benign. Wishing the best outcome for you! Prayers 🙏
