Radical Feminists Censored on Chinese Social MediaThe radical feminist movement 6B4T, which encourages women to reject relationships with men, has been banned on Chinese social media platforms as the country faces a rising population crisis and a shortage of women. @Ariana_Erbon writes for 4W:https://4w.pub/radical-feminists-censored-on-chinese-social-media

@4WPub @Ariana_Erbon I think this one is more detailed than that on Vice. I agree that women at large are facing more challenges than before, so why don’t we stick to separatism and create a female-only space by kicking out all males who disagree with us?更具体的一篇报道,除了surveillance以外还讲到了sex-selective abortions/conceptions and female infanticide, women trafficking, cooling-off period of divorce. 和Reddit关闭女性论坛的做派一样,不如干脆实行性别隔离,把所有蝻的都赶出女性空间吧。

@femsolaI was quite interested to see Chinese showing up here on Pinterest. Nice to see you here in general too. If I may, I’d like to ask you something language related. Is it difficult to make Chinese work on a keyboard designed for the Latin alphabet? I did an image search for Chinese keyboards and it looks very interesting. I also notice that in this post you swapped between Chinese and latin script, do you toggle a setting somewhere for that or how does that happen? I always marvel at written Chinese, it looks so complicated and yet condensed compared to what I know. @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon

@Gnomeshatecheese @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon Actually it’s been normal for us to type with Latin alphabet coz we use “pinyin” in simplified Chinese, which is the pronunciation of the characters. I think that keyboard you searched is based on how the character is written. Few people use that keyboard now and it’s easy to swap between Chinese and English as the keyboards are the same. Or maybe you searched a keyboard for traditional Chinese characters (bolder characters on the left). The traditional ones are more complicated and they are mainly used by people in Hong Kong and Taiwan. I also prefer traditional Chinese characters because you can see more clearly what the character means from its shape. Simplified Chinese (right side of the arrows) just abandon something like the “soul” of Chinese culture. The icon you use is so cute! I think it’s the comic image of “aobai”, a character in a comedy film by Zhou Xingchi.

@femsola Oh so that’s what pinyin is, I had misunderstood it to be a Chinese set of sound symbols created for modern contexts. I didn’t realise it used the Latin alphabet. I took Japanese at some point so I have a very slight familiarity with what they called kanji. I find it a fascinating writing system, though one which it would take me quite a lot of time to learn to “see” properly, if you know what I mean. Writing the signs is a lot of fun though. My icon is actually a depiction of a European spirit, in English mostly known as “gnome”, Dutch Kabouter. German “Gnom”, other languages similar versions. The picture is closest to Rien van Poortvliet’s imagining of the creature, he was a Dutch artist who painted nature and Gnomes. Nordic countries have a similar character, but that one is either a house spirit or a location spirit. The Nordic version is decidedly less kindly than the Dutch version, they can get quite stroppy if you don’t treat the house and them right. The likeness to the character you mentioned is really rather striking, I think there must be some sort of universal archetype of “old bearded man with a red hat”. Sorry about the ramble, folklore is one of my favourite topics, I tend to go on about it a bit too much. @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon

@GnomeshatecheeseIt’s good to know about your understanding about Chinese characters. I think it’s interesting that people of different writing systems share their views about each other’s culture. I often heard from foreign friends saying how difficult it is to learn Chinese so I think maybe it really takes some time to “see” a language properly, as some Chinese students also struggle to learn English. But I am glad that we can reach some consensus on certain issues.Ohh I have mistaken that image. It looks too alike 😂. In Chinese we also have a similar spirit, we set a tablet at home and pray to him and light up candles every month so he can protect the whole family from evil spirit. It’s good to know about gnome too, thanks! @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon

@femsola @Gnomeshatecheese @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon Chinese have trouble understanding each other with so many different dialects and European companies who have set up in China have found they need to employ at least 5 different interpreters to try and get a clue what their new employees are saying and often their interpreters reply is to the employers is this "We think she is saying, I would like to go home, let me out?"

@femsola I think with Chinese characters it takes a while to learn to see the shapes and combinations. For an unlearned eye they just look like a pile of lines, but as you learn to recognise the smaller shapes that make up the bigger shapes, it becomes possible to read the whole sign without having to consciously look at each individual stroke. There seems to be a similar process in learning to “hear” a language, one needs to learn to recognise which sounds go together to form syllables and words, and that takes time. Before that it all just sounds like an unmanageable jumble. I only now realised that my icon doesn’t show the hat properly! Here’s that Dutch artist’s (Poortvliet) rendition of the character. But if you flatten the hat, it does indeed look a lot like the character you mentioned! In Nordic countries the short-tempered house guardian also gets served food. At a feast, food could be left out before eating for a while for the house guardian, or leftovers could be left on the table overnight. If you neglected to do this or in general behave well, the gnome could get very angry and in the worst case, burn a building down. When treated well, it would make sure the house succeeded. Nobody prayed to them though. The continental European gnomes though were much more nice, lived in holes in the ground and minded their own business. @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon

@Gnomeshatecheese Wow the folklore of gnome is so fascinating! I wonder if this is related to religion or does everyone believes in its existence. I also wonder if there is any spirit with a female image in your country or Europe?@4WPub @Ariana_Erbon

@femsola Well the continental Gnome seems to date back to the European Renaissance, or the 1500s, that’s when it shows up in literature. It’s not related to Christianity, and where it originally came from, is unclear. The Nordic version is ancient, well predates Christianity and goes back to the ancient beliefs about location spirits. I have no idea how many people actually still believe in either. I think many more are aware of the tradition and pass it on than actually believe in their existence. The Nordic version could be either male or female, as they were originally just location spirits (to the extent that spirits even are male or female, it’s possible this was just appearance). The continental version is typically depicted as male, but to the extent that they were thought of as “earth folk”, they likely would’ve been both male and female, though I’m not absolutely sure. The folklore across Europe has lots of individual female spirits or personifications as well. The pre-Christian folklore is quite rich in them, and of course every area has its own variation. The extent to which the pre-Christian lore has survived is of course another matter. @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon

@EmmaFaber @4WPub @Ariana_Erbon @Gnomeshatecheese True. In Guangdong Province, we have at least seven dialects and some dialects just sound like a foreign language.
