Don't blame google for them tracking you through their services, blame yourself for using their services and thereby supporting their businessmodel. We can only make change if we change. I see a lot of people say they use google through some anonymized gate but I believe that it's the wrong way to approach it if you actually want to make a change.

@metalune This is a bad take. Google has systematically made people dependent on them, and taken steps to lock people into their systems.

@metalune the real issue is they track you regardless of you're using their service or not.

@wizzwizz4 of course, there is a diff wether you are using it for work, because some places require you to use idk, smth like Google Docs, or Google Drive. But we won't change google by doing the same we've always been doing, they don't care wether you're using their services with a bad taste in your mouth or not.

@marcosg indeed, that IS a problem. but that's why I said "tracking you through their services" by which I mean "if you are using their services, don't be mad at them for tracking you"

@metalune But we *should* still blame Google – we should be working to ensure accountability. Talk to your politicians, and stuff like that.We programmers need to build stable, interoperable, usable alternatives, so it's slightly less impossible for people to leave Google.

@metalune the issue is its hard to compete with their "free software" products, which you pay for with your data vs ones that you pay with your money. There's a bunch of good apps out there like protonmail/tutanota for email or mega.nz for drive which are both free and don't track you. But these usually don't get the visibility they deserve. The mainstream is used to paying with their data. Thankfully we're making progress nowadays, but it's still slow.

@metalune blame the politicians who allow their abusive business model to exist

@rsheftel I don't know why but I'm not a BIG fan of the government controlling everything, I think in the end We should be the ones who make the change.

@metalune Oh, of course! I was just complaining about Google tracking you regardless of you using their service, which is immoral. They can do whatever they want on their services while complying with the law. People using their services must know it, and not complain for that.

@metalune think of this like a collective action problem, and the government is like a union to let your voice be heard. Read Upton Sinclar's The Jungle... you are the worked and Google is the abusive meat packing employer. You need a union to have your voice heard.

@rsheftel I usually think of governments more like big Mamas trying to make sure that her kids don't kill each other.
