       Left today a messaging group from a popular chat app that never added any value in my daily life, where the participants spoke only in passive-aggressive and to where I was dragged in mostly due to pressure ("all of $COMMUNITY is there, man!")Damn, life's good. At this rate, who knows- I might become #smartphone-free at last.

       I'm considering permanently deleting the #WhatsApp app, but informing any contacts that I care about there that I'll be reachable via my email address before I do so.In essence I'd go full s/WhatsApp/Email/ in my life from now. Hey, either way I don't have a realistic expectation of #privacy. At least I can check my email on any platform or device I want. 🤷‍♂️

       @huy_ngo I guess, so. Invariably *someone* will complain that "it's 2021, who uses still email," but I'm yet to find someone who does not have an email app in their phone.

       @tronss definitely will introduce them to it - but only if they demonstrate interest.If they just go with "oh, I don't have the time/skill/desire for this" then at least with email they don't need to install anything new.

       @kzimmermann It was only for security reasons. Email is not safe and xmpp uses omemo in individual conversations and it's available in many platforms, but maybe you already know it.

       @tronss oh yeah, #XMPP is much safer and much better than email, and I'd use it over email any given day.But my communication tools depend on the other people using them as well, and as much as we try to celebrate "victories" of converting people to XMPP, the reality is that the majority doesn't give a shit. Hence I'll fall back to the omnipresent #email.You can't have a realistic expectation of privacy in either Email or Whatsapp anyway, so I might as well use the free one.

       @tronss don't get me wrong, though - the idea is not lost in me!If I annoy people enough to make them start thinking about what they can use instead of email for secure IM, the first and foremost alternative I'll give them will definitely be XMPP over #omemo.It'll be a little guerrilla war of attrition for Free Software :)

       @kzimmermann I gave people 30 days and told them to email, call or use Signal, then deleted my Facebook. I posted a couple of times to make sure it got seen. I figure anybody who cares enough to stay in touch would, and if they didn't, well they weren't that important after all.
