The fact that Linux can even run Windows applications is kind of an anti-feature imo. You can argue that realpolitik demands some level of compromise, but if being a cross-compatible platform is your only goal technically there's no reason that macOS or Windows couldn't fill the same niche. Basically it isn't a terribly convincing for someone to invest learning a different platform from the one they're already familiar with. And it's unfortunate because instead of challenging software companies to treat free software operating systems as first class citizens and finding more creative ways of monetizing software, solutions like Wine and Darling increasingly seem as if they're simply making the FOSS ecosystem more reliant on backwards engineering poorly documented proprietary APIs and calling it 'good enough'.

@lycheefroot people telling me to use wine is probably part of why it took me so long to actually use linux for any significant period of time ( full time now )

@lycheefroot I agree with this and I've been thinking about it a lot with the advent of Proton - while nice for older games that will never get updated with Linux support, why would someone create a native Linux version of a game when Linux users can just be expected to run it through a compatibility layer (barring cases of already incompatible anticheat software)?Developers frequently test to see if games run in Proton now, often fixing bugs, and that's nice on some level, but it's inevitably going to delay things like Vulkan replacing DirectX and it has reduced the pressure on developers to actually make things natively compatible. There's less of a need than ever to abandon Windows-specific proprietary frameworks.

@parity Yeah like I definitely think Wine has it's place in terms of software preservation because there are a ton of 20, 25 and 30 year old applications that (mercifully) no longer run under Windows natively. And it is nice that developers put at least some thought into getting games running through Proton, but I would prefer if it forced companies to think about the kind of tools they're using and convinced them to choose more portable frameworks.

@lycheefroot it's honestly kind of impressive in that specific regard - it's easier to get 20 year old Windows software running on Linux than 10 year old Linux software.

@lycheefroot a pretty common thing in the plan9 chat rooms is someone showing up and asking how hard it would be to port chrome i try to be nice and ask them to consider using a given os on its own merits before asking for the compatibility layer that flattens it into being exactly like everything elselinux is still there whenever you want it
