If they get a rise out of you you're giving them what they want and they'll just do it more."His advice did work, though slowly and painfully and sometimes I wonder if an honest fist fight would have been quicker.

One of the consequences of my early experience is that I developed the habit of being impassive, nonreactive and non-expressive. Not just blending with the wallpaper but BEING the wallpaper. Bug or feature? Not being messed with by anyone also means not being engaged by anyone. That's not always a good place to be and some of my personal work in recent years has been to partially reverse that habit.

When I look back at my 20's and 30's, I see so many situations that I caused to go sideways due to emotions run amuck.Things I should have just ignored or not even noticed became huge.Now I'm in my late 60's and I don't care enough to see insults or, if I do, to just shrug and go on. No one has to wear the label that an idiot tags them with.
