Fortunately I rarely see it on this platform, but......I always think people who expect corporations to have a moral company are a special kind of naive.

@ChrisWere ... or think it's genuine when corporations claim to behave morally...It's like this SAS guy they just cancelled.. Middlesomething in the UK. He told them he quit, so they made up a bunch of crazy pop culture 'morale' stuff to 'fire' him first. They'll use morality as a tool, but it's not their core values.

@julloyart @ChrisWere I'm probably naive, but I think we need to build a society which produces good people, not a society that assumes people are bad. There are so many good people all around, why all people can't be like that.

@Tjiho @julloyart Morality is not an easy thing to agree on at the best of times. It's a very human trait, hence why corporations are incapable of it.I think as human's we're very good at doing what suits us and making excuses for it after the fact. And it's easier to make convincing excuses than putting in the hard legwork of creating a better world. Especially when we see so many others treading the same path.

@Tjiho @julloyart My very existence as a Western European is fuelled by the exploitation the people and planet the world over.Lithium mining for my electronics, deforestation for agriculture, coal mining, the exploitative labour practices of countries like China... it's a long list.Am I morally corrupt for supporting these businesses and practices? Do I have a choice? Do the choices made by wider society nullify my choices as an individual? Not easy questions, I think.

@ChrisWere @Tjiho Some (maybe most) are walking along the lines of morality (some better than others). In german we have a word for the current sociaty (maybe the society was like this half a century ago as well): Ellenbogengesellschaft. Roughly translates to that you have to have your "elbows out" to make your way. Never was a friend of that kind of thinking. I'm always someone who rather helps other people "get up" than myself.

@ChrisWere @Tjiho And then is privilige like you describe here. I'm not free of that guilt as well, since I'm from germany. But I try to do my little steps towards a better world (shop locally as far as possible etc). The thing is, as individuals it's difficult to make a real impact to change the world to a better place. But as long as there are those that try their best to better it, it might work out in the long run.

@julloyart @Tjiho I certainly feel that too.I think that when faced with the direct consequences of our actions, most people walk along the lines of morality. But a lot of decisions we make nowadays affects people we've never met and will never know and I think that makes human connection and empathy more difficult.Perhaps it's not that people are good or bad, but rather we've build a world which disconnects us too much?

@julloyart @Tjiho I try and walk the same path. There are a few good projects in my local area which are teaching people how to repair household items, (pre-Covid) rather than throwing them out, so let's hope there's hope.

@ChrisWere @Tjiho @julloyart >Morality is not an easy thing to agree on at the best of timesThroughout history the normal state is near universal agreement on ethical questions within a society.>But a lot of decisions we make nowadays affects people we've never met and will never know and I think that makes human connection and empathy more difficult. They don't. Nobody is working in Lithium mines *for you*. Your choices have an effect of precisely zero. I don't think the moral question has an easy an answer, but even if you found one, it would be purely aesthetics.

@ChrisWere Exactly. They are only "moral" as long as it gives them more profit, because the "free" system we have only rewards more profits. In a profit driven system "moral" is something that is sold.

@ChrisWere @Tjiho @julloyart don't feel guilty about the earthrape by multinational corporations exploiting the entire planet for shareholders and laws that make the executives legally obligated to maximize profits at the expense of people. Unless you personally own a lithium mining company. It is corporations, (non-human legal entities with the same rights as a flesh and blood human) who are destroying the environment, cutting down whole forests, polluting, strip mining, etc. They use the media to make it seem like all the destruction they are causing is the fault of the common man. It is not. It is directly a result of their destructive business practices, and now they want to guilt trip us into living without an acceptable level quality of life and with a subpar standard of living,so they can lockin their supplies of dwindling resources. They want us all living in pods and eating bugs so they can continue their wholesale exploitation for greed. The whole global climate change shit is a scam It is a hustle which allows them to institute carbon taxes on everything so they can charge us for the damage they have caused, every time we buy anything.
