       statistics question: is it harder to conclude that a ball is or isn't red or to conclude what color it is?I'll even allow that there's a finite set of colors to pick from and clear definitions of what "colors" are

       @lm I would say that in general it is easier to determine if the ball is red, although it does depend on what exactly you can measure.The statement "The ball is X color" is stronger than "The ball is not red", because "The ball is green color" immediately tells you "The ball is not red" but "the ball is not red" does not tell you anything about whether "the ball is green color" is true, unless there are exactly two possibilities for the color.
