What should be my next OS to try out in #VirtualBox?I've been meaning to try out some #BSD lately, but sorta chickening out to do it bare metal. Also #Gentoo. (Yes, I've been wanting to get more hands on with configuring stuff, so what else is there?)

@kat how "mature" are they right now anyway? Last time I even heard of them there was only a very early alpha available for it, but looking into recent screenshots, it seems the project has beefed up considerably!https://reactos.org/gallery/

@kzimmermann @kat Initial release 23 years ago makes me want to say that it's never going to get mature! It's ok for some tasks/apps. But for others it still has stability issues. Crashes all the time.Linus also had video about it with kind of the same conclusion:https://invidious.tube/watch?v=U6d7E1uKSmg

@kzimmermann I recently tried NomadBSD and @hellosystem . They're both great, worked out of the box. Thinking of trying them out more extensively. But if you seek something different, you can try OSs written in assembly:-MenuetOS-KolibriOSOr maybe something from here: https://www.techradar.com/news/best-alternative-operating-systems

@adnan360 I had read about #NomadBSD recently too, sort of a FreeBSD live medium with persistence for USBs, yeah? Maybe could be a way to dip the toes into BSD without starting from scratch. On the other hand, I sort of want to try from scratch, too :D

@kzimmermann "from scratch"? Got it. :)Then this might be your answer:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_From_ScratchIf you try it, fair warning. I've heard it has a lot of troubleshooting involved, lots of kernel build messages to be dealt with. So it won't be anything you can do in a short time.

@kzimmermann do you have any extra bare metal device? You could play with OpenBSD as a firewall and learn their philosophy while having something useful. I don't think running it as a desktop would be as initially impressive.

@kzimmermann Have you ever tried a Distro called FerenOS ? I was quickly learning to love it when i think there was a post one day saying the guy behind it had to take a break while he finished his exams! But just quickly looking it up now it looks like it might be back up and running. It looked and felt great to use, could easily be tweaked to mimic any version of Windows or Mac, and some programs ran natively without WINE. In fact, i think i've just convinced myself to try it again! 😁

Haiku OShttps://www.haiku-os.org/Haiku is an open source operating system inspired by BeOS.Many GUI programs such as Firefox and libre office should be available on Haiku. One thing that Haiku has and I really like is the tabbed window feature. Any unrelated program can become a tab in same window and you can switch between them like as if they were tabs in a browser. "Sets" is a similar feture Microsoft tried to implement into Windows but failed.https://www.windowslatest.com/2019/09/21/windows-10-sets-tabbed-windows-feature-might-be-making-a-comeback/@kzimmermann

@tomosaigon I do, but I sort of already put it to use, and didn't wanna ruin the install. I heard many great things about OpenBSD, like it being the "sanest" of BSDs around, that sounds interesting, I guess?

@kzimmermann I like that it uses a great package manager (xbps), runit instead of systemd (although I prefer OpenRC), LibreSSL, and offers both glibc and musl versions depending on your needs. It also has decent documentation (https://docs.voidlinux.org/). Not quite on par with the Arch Wiki but leagues above something like Alpine which I rarely trust the documentation for because the information always seems to be outdated.

@kzimmermann I would recommend #Gentoo. I've been using it for almost 18 years. Never looked back.I originally started with #LFS for true bare metal, but while you learn a lot, it's a huge effort to maintain. With #Gentoo, you'll learn quite a bit, and in the end, you'll have a *very* manageable system to use as your regular distro.
