I like- informatics, for offering effective means to tackle practical information processing and communication problems (storage is communication across time). Although it's value it dubious in isolation.- natural sciences (from physics to biology), for offering conceptual answers to specific principal question. Although these are pretty hand-wavy, and neither deep analysis nor practical applications are considered.- (pure) mathematics, for staying above the speculations and focusing on the difficult parts, of deriving deep conclusions from obvious hypotheses. Although it's pretty dry and hard.Honestly I don't quite understand how somebody may stay confined to any of these and still find it meaningful. Excluding the humanities is fine though.

@amiloradovsky >Honestly I don't quite understand how somebody may stay confined to any of these and still find it meaningful.it requires a bit of obsession.

@mithrandir @amiloradovsky Yes, obsession is a prerequisite for a PhD.

@amiloradovsky The humanities are very important, as they teach you how humans will screw you out of all your achievements in the areas you like and use the products of your labour to inflict horror after horror on everyone, yet somehow the show keeps rolling (until one day it doesn't).

@machado Ignorance of that should be considered a bliss: I don't need any more confirmation of my hopelessness. At least until these "studies" offer any principal means for changing anything of importance. Never worked for me, although I tried to befriend the humanities several times. Nope, they're just pure entertainment or worse.

@amiloradovsky @machado without a solid understanding of the humanities, one is forever hobbled in writing, and a good manifesto or book can definitely change the world. So it really depends on what you consider 'important'.
