@anarchist912If they'd use that, fine. To me, a neoliberal makes the mistake of incorporating market fundamentalism into their worldview, such that it eventually comes to dominate their thinking. Libertarians who call themselves "classical liberals" usually make the same mistake as neoliberals imo.

@Johnny_of_the_swampFrom the conservative perspective, that does seem to be a turning point. But the left uses it for something like "the establishment". I think it may have started as sarcastic but evolved. In truth, illiberalism comes from the woke but also from the establishment that tries to shut out alternative viewpoints. Greenwald is one of the best examples of a liberal I can think of, but as far as those on the left goes, he uses the term to attack others most relentlessly. Ugh.

Can you recommend a more liberal instance than mastodon.technology, where I am at? The admin doesn't want for example well-reasoned, scientifically undermined vaccine skepticism, just because it would draw a certain clientele.His code of conduct is a bit too strict for my taste. My knowledge is superficial about that, but in that historice situation »free trade« makes sense to me, when it was a privilege. Maybe it was a mistake to call it free trade. It should have been called equal trade. Because it was indeed free, but only for some. And that is the problem. We need the same rules and freedoms for everyone. Damnit!

@wjmaggos Hard to say how much of him doing that is just speaking in the common vernacular. For better or for worse we have a whole mess of words that have taken this path (like the cousin 'libertarian'). For branding purposes I think it would be better to find a different label but I don't know how that would actually happen.

@anarchist912 I think we generally agree on trade but I look at liberal as describing a culture, not so much policy. more about encouraging conversation and critical thinking, than what laws should come out of that. but obviously some laws would limit or deter that culture, so there is overlap.trade is part of how ideas migrate and evolve, so restrictions on that are generally bad. but it should all be up for debate. like markets are good but never perfect. etc etc.

@Johnny_of_the_swamp @wjmaggos There is definitely a need for clarification of meaning with the term liberalism. I got blocked from @AnarchoNinaWrites because she assumes as a liberal I am pro-capitalism and can't be anarchist and then took all my arguments as an offense, instead of inspiration to strengthening and developing ideas. For me liberalism was about freedom. Everything else is just approaches TO freedom. Anarcho-syndicalism can be one. No?

@anarchist912 @wjmaggos In terms of philosophy and original meanings, yes. But here in the US libertarian is an extremely loaded term associated with a very cringe political party. For a time I described myself as a libertarian but stopped doing so even before my views shifted, simply because doing so invited people to make all kinds of wrong assumptions about my beliefs.
