It might mostly be nostalgia, but I remember websites on the internet in the 90s feeling more like "places". Now everything is, like, an app.. and I don't like it nearly as much.

It makes so much sense: the inverse-sorted timeline, it's *always hungry for more content*.Imagine how wild it would be if your mastodon TL was "done for the day", or the year, or just *done*.

Capitalism thrives by making things *legible*. Blogs are delightfully easy to parse and index compared to hand-coded websites. Blogs are very quantifiable.

If your mastodon instance was "done", then you could start to explore new mediums for communication and self-expressionInfinite timeline apps just keep you sucked in, creating content for its timeline, forever

@oak just turn it off. I spend most of my day not looking at "mastodon"

@Moon @oak serendipity holds more value to me than algorithms. In your own mind there are multiple endless streams. You spend most of your time ignoring them.

@JoYo @oak artificially stopping the timeline is more of a manipulative algorithm than just showing things as they are written, isn't it?

@oak Places still have people saying and doing things with each other that will ultimately be forgotten save for slivers of memories. I think it is just about finding a small group that you can interact with. Fosstodon.org is pretty neat for me. And I have several Discord groups that I feel like are a place. I was a part of large old school forum back in the day. It had a general focus but certainly did not feel like a place in the same way a smaller group does.

@oak I don't necessity need it to be an app, but at least have a mobile site. But in the end, the problem is just that you can't keep up with everything. So many sites and services that want your attention. There were sites that I visited daily religiously, but completely forgot about at some point. People can just get informed about new content via social media. But there's one alternative still: Email newsletters, but not every site offers them. I like newsletters.

@oak Yep, content is what makes users come back. Say, What if you had a compelling app where users created their own content punctuated by third party advertisers You’d just sit back and rake in the dough.
