I thought about this a lot in 2020, after writing mainly JS for ~6 years now:https://hisham.hm/2020/01/20/dynamic-type-systems-arent-even-simpler/

Before JS, I mostly wrote Java. And honestly? I miss having clearly defined types, and having more confidence after the compiler had run. That said, not having to think about types can be really nice for hacking together small programs!

What if..mastodon, except without federation. Each instance has the space to develop its own deeply unique culture, separate from the rest of the internet. And while travel between instances is possible, it's more akin to going on a journey to a far away place, and finding yourself immersed in their local instance's culture, vs simply seeing other instance's members aggregated in your local timeline.

It makes so much sense: the inverse-sorted timeline, it's *always hungry for more content*.Imagine how wild it would be if your mastodon TL was "done for the day", or the year, or just *done*.

Capitalism thrives by making things *legible*. Blogs are delightfully easy to parse and index compared to hand-coded websites. Blogs are very quantifiable.

If your mastodon instance was "done", then you could start to explore new mediums for communication and self-expressionInfinite timeline apps just keep you sucked in, creating content for its timeline, forever

Fucking adoring /The Long Way/ by Bernard Moitessier."In the beginning they could not understand my insistence on getting away from the compass; that god of the West. But in exchange, they began to hear the sky and sea talking with the boat. And when blue-tinted land appeared on the horizon, looking as it did to the mariners of old, all nimbed with mystery, a few of them felt that our rigorous techniques should leave a door open to those gods which the modern world tries so hard to exclude."
