I self-hosted Misskey for 3 days and discovered the following:1. The #fediverse is seriously addictive and might just be the social media “platform” I’ve been looking for2. #misskey is a wonderful, gorgeous piece of software, which is why I wanted to join an instance that runs it3. Just because a software can be #selfhosted doesn’t mean it’s the best option. The fediverse needs plenty of instances, but for only one user it’s too much effort

@kisacatHi! I recognize myself in parts of that: I decided to test the fediverse "properly" this time. Previously (like 9 years ago) I created accounts, found no one I knew and went back to the big tech services. This time around I decided to try it out more proper, and ignore that most of my IRL/online friends are not on it, and make new friends whilst waiting for others. I signed up (or revived) on all the services, on public instances. Addictive indeed. Now, I actually like tinkering with servers, so 1 month later I now sit with one self hosted instance of Friendica and another for Pleroma. Loving it so far. It hasn't been glitch-free for sure. I would struggle right now to give "the best" advice to my other friends on where they (who are not me) should start. However, my Pleroma instance is just standing there, ticking away. No work at all, it just works. My Friendica instance I buggered up a bit (tried to swap database) but have gotten back on its feet. I really like Friendica, though I would probably say if one is not in to installing and admining servers/services, it probably is too much work for most people (though I like the concept of "optimal federation").I use Friendica and Pleroma for different purposes though, just like I use(d) Facebook and Twitter for different purposes. But mostly wanted to say "Hi and welcome" and "I hear you". :)

Why don't you use Yunohost? Makes installing hundreds of applications, like Friendica, Mastdodon, Pleroma and so forth, one click. Plus backups and all tnat managed via a panel. That's how we want to release a suite of apps like friendica, peertube, nextcloud, cryptpad and more...so far, from our tests, everything works stellar.

@tio @mathias @kisacat YunoHost is pretty good in that it makes hosting easy, but the trade-off is that it often lags behind on major releases of applications by several substantial point versions. It used to be impossible to upgrade NextCloud past a certain point, because it had dependencies only present in a future version of Debian, which wasn't compatible with YunoHost.

I understand and it is good to know these limitations. However, YNH makes it so easy that allows some like us, who otherwise won't, to provide a suite of free services for everyone. Outdated software for some services, may be better than none. But I understand your point for sure.
