After locking my account, my second follow request was from Mussolini.alessandropardini@social.byoblu.comSO, YEPIt's a good idea for everyone to lock their account to check who's following you (even if you make no protected posts, if only to report them!) X"DD#Fediblock

@codepuppy This is all true, and as moderator of this instance, which concentrates on math and STEM in general, I've blocked them. But I've been wondering ...In general, toots will exist in the fediverse, but only arrive on this instance if made by someone who is followed by someone here.So if no one here follows them, then their toots will never arrive here. It does no harm for me to block them, but really, if their toots never arrive here, why should I?

@codepuppy There are many thousands of accounts that I would happily block, and this is one of them, but it's like whack-a-mole, so if their toots never arrive here I have to wonder why I would bother.PS: I *have* blocked them, but I'm using this as an opportunity to wonder about policy.

@ColinTheMathmo Thanks! No worries :)Well I don't suppose it matters too much either way in that caseBut I suppose it's also possible for people to not make a report because they've been threatened or doxxed. So reporting/blocking these instances might help reduce the chances of that happening, or give relief to someone who's being harassed and wanted to report it but didn't feel safe doing so.Also don't toots also arrive here if part of a thread that involves someone who's followed?

@codepuppy Short answer is that I don't know, but I didn't think so.It might be nice to see a definitive statement about what toots turn up on an instance.

@ColinTheMathmo That's a good question I don't understand about the fedi: are things hotlinked from other servers or is every word I see when I'm using my browser here sent through this server at least transiently? On the other hand the technicals might be a bit pedantic/irrelevant with respect to peoples' safety. But then safety from public posts being seen by fascists looking to dox people isn't provided by blocking/defederating anyway; they can just look on the website as an anonymous user.

@ColinTheMathmo Ah I know two huge things it would prevent. It would proactively keep anonymous people (incl. prospective users) from looking at some post on Mathstodon and seeing fascists in the reply thread,And would alleviate the work of every user having to block every fascist (that old O(n*m) vs O(n+m) problem) for non-anonymous usersInter-user shareable blocklists might also be useful and ease admins' burden, but I heard that the mastodon devs are against that? idk

@ColinTheMathmo (honestly if I could make the fediverse from scratch I'd maybe have each user be their own entity in a P2P network, not tied to a server; and communities could be more loose, so you could have places users could congregate based on interest (eg mathstodon) and admin/modding could be separate, so users could "subscribe" to moderators who were random people who wanted to spend the time to proactively seek out / block fascists/etc. freeing users to focus on other things)#fediverse

@codepuppy @ColinTheMathmo amusingly, this is essentially the same pattern as the early days of blogging and RSSThe shared moderation is the stuff that’s needed at the scale of people who publish today. Matrix has done some research on portable reputation that looks interesting

Let's see if the instance blocks the account though; maybe they don't know it's there *doubting sounds*I sent the report to that instance as well.
