@Dogenku Norman Vincent Peale, who Trump was a big fan of, was one of the people who started the philosophy of New Thought, along with Orison Swett Mardon before Peale. I think Trump went to the Marble Collegiate Church in NYC, where Peale was the pastor for many years.

@Lisa22 Thank you.Norman Vincent Peale did not start the philosophy of New Thought (I traced the history back to the 16th century), but a great proponent and popularizer. Not only Trump used to attend Dr. Peale' sermons as a young boy and man but also his church is where Trump met Marla Maples and then later had the marriage ceremony!

@Dogenku Maybe not, but it was coined "New Thought" with Peale, from what I understand.

@Lisa22 Thank you.William James in The Varieties of Religious Experience mentions "New Thought" and his book was based on a series of lectures given in 1901 - 1902. So the name precedes Dr. Peale. Whose naming? We don't know.New Thought flourished in the US (which makes sense), starting with the work of Phineas Quimby (1802–1866) in mental healing. Hence he is often called the originator. The UK also produced some great thinkers and writers such as Thomas Troward and James Allen.

@Dogenku Thanks for clarifying about the New Thought origination. I know about James Allen, but not Thomas Troward. Orson Swett Marden was also admired as writing similarly to Peale.

@Lisa22 Thank you.I have read Thomas Troward and James Allen quite thoroughly but never read Orson Swett Marden. Thank you for mentioning his name.Troward (1847-1916) and Marden (1848-1924) were exact contemporaries!

@Dogenku You are welcome! Marden is fascinating -- I read one of his books awhile ago, but the way he writes, he could've been a mentor to Trump.

@Dogenku Marden's book description:"It has sent thousands of youths, with renewed determination, back to school or college, back to all sorts of vocations which they had abandoned in moments of discouragement. It has kept scores of business men from failure after they had given up all hope.Crowned heads, presidents of republics, members of the British and other parliaments, members of the United States Supreme Court, have thanked the author for giving it to the world."
