I got the fright of my life when driving to work, this morning.I heard a clattering noise, and then something (it was still dark) hit me on the leg.WHAT WAS THAT?It took a moment, or two, to realise it was my satnav falling from the windscreen. I don't know why it happened, it has been happily stuck to the windscreen for a year.Totally sucks, or rather it didn't.

@fitheach That happened to me once, too. I reflexively tried to catch the thing and almost ran off the road.

@Nasenspray I was concentrating on my driving, and it was dark, so didn't know what it was that hit me. Luckily, no damage to the satnav, and it is now stuck to the windscreen again. I'll need to remember the anniversary, as it might decide to fall again. It would've been a shame to save the satnav, and wreck your car.

@fitheach @Nasenspray the one my driving instructor used was notorious for this (sometimes falling off the dash altogether and being yeeted across the car when cornering, even at low speed), and the screen contrast was never set right - I do wonder now if this might have been in part deliberate to get you used to dealing safely with things like this (since 2017 80% of all UK driving tests require use of a satnav device on the test)

@fitheach Yes, but that reflex is strong. Catching a bag that's just falling from the seat, or fighting with a tiny insect on the windscreen - I can't fight that, it just happens.

@vfrmedia Really? What do they have to do with the satnav in the driving test?@Nasenspray

@fitheach you have to drive for around 20 minutes independently following directions from the satnav whilst not doing anything unsafe (its more a test of how you cope with distractions than a navigation exercise, there is no penalty for going off the route provided you do so safely)@Nasenspray

@fitheach since 2010 there has always been an independent driving bit in the test where the examiner just says something like "follow signs to Felixstowe, until I tell you otherwise" (rather than giving directions at every turn); from 2017 onwards this bit got increased from 10 to 20 minutes and either uses the satnav or (rarer these days) an instruction to follow signs to a particular destination...@Nasenspray

@fitheach I was once driving the kids to school and could hear an awful noise every time I turned a corner. Turned out I’d left my house keys on the roof. Good job it was a short, slow drive.

@vfrmedia The driving test has changed a bit since my day. My motorcycle test was, sort of, similar. I was told to follow the road ahead, and the examiner pursued me in his car. He lost me at one stage because he got stuck behind traffic, and I zoomed ahead. Once I realised I'd lost him, I pulled over, and waited. I passed the test.@Nasenspray

@fitheach It was my first car, a Nissan Micra, and ancient when I got it. I didn’t even think to check. The bodywork was so bad that when I got a flat tire and tried to jack it up, the jack punched holes through the body instead of lifting the car.
