@clayogra @xj9 #Waterfox was good if you don’t want to support #Mozilla. But now that’s owned by #Startpage, who use #Google results.Just use Firefox but don’t use Google 🙃

@xj9 I'm using Edgeium and it's fucking good. like seriously it's high quality and it's very low on ram, about 500MB of ram with all my extensions and tabs and experimental flags. that's some crazy low ram usage

@matt Thank you!! 🙂 Well, I do that, but @xj9 still seems to consider that a way of using Google, I guess...

@clayogra @xj9 Google pay Mozilla to be in the default search spot. Google pay so much $$$ for that, it’s one of the biggest (but not only) sources of funding for the company. Google possibly (but I don’t know or sure) give donations to the Mozilla Foundation too. Mozilla could reject Google’s money, but they need to source that $$$ from elsewhere. Other search partnerships, sponsored sites, Pocket subscriptions. And that money alone doesn’t pay for fancy tech industry offices and employees.

@lanodan @xj9 Well, I'd say a bit better than that, since a lot of features are native instead of hacky browser extension stuff

@aearil @xj9 Yeah, a bit better.I mean I have a WebKitGTK browser and other than patching it or some dependencies it has (which at least are system ones, like GnuTLS/OpenSSL instead of BoringSSL and hooking to gstreamer instead of having a custom video decoding setup) there isn't that many things one could do.

@lanodan Yeah... I hate that the W3C keeps moving the goalposts so fast that basically only google can keep up with the work of developing a browser engine ><

@aearil Why only Google? I mean Apple isn't following Google as they are properly independent but they do keep up on stuff that matters. Also W3C isn't much of a standard body like most people think it is. Most W3C "standards" are christmas wish lists while IETF is more like "Well, here's the current state of things, they are now stable enough to be standard".

@lanodan I say google because chromium-derivatives are taking over the majority of the browser market, and all other engine are more and more looking like outsiders. As for the W3C, yeah, that might not be the most pertinent standard body to mention anymore, since it seems like google now just need to implement something into chrome and all the others need to scramble to follow :/

@aearil Not really, Apple often says No to Google's shit.Like WebUSB? Hard no.And there was that Multimedia Stream or whatever that's like "We don't understand Atom so we're doing our own thing with fucking JSON" and it basically got ignored from them.

@lanodan @aearil webusb is actually pretty nice, just needs a permission toggle.I mean there are tools that can flash arduino's and they could not do that without webusb. Those tools are very welcome for beginners

@clayogra @matt I would consider Mozilla to be firmly in Google's pocket. maybe that could change, but there's a ton of money in that relationship that would be very difficult to say "no" to in order to gain independence.

@reto @aearil It's absolutely terrible for beginners. You can flash most USB devices with firmware and the protocols are often custom so you can't block it so easily. And basically all newbies will download+install stuff from completely untrusted sources.Want an example? Create something like flash-my-razer.com and do a firmware that's basically the USB rubber ducky, you can then become root on way too many devices.
