If your website requires JavaScript or is behind Cloudflare, please do not expect me to actually read whatever is on it.

If you insist on requiring JavaScript to read text, I insist that you take a screenshot of your website and fax it to me every time you attempt to direct me to it.

@polarisfm@www.librepunk.club So... several fediverse instance softwares? I know that Mastodon doesn't need it., thankfully. But I think that both pleroma and misskey use it. I have to admit it is shit though.

@shadowferret I would characterize those more as "webapps" than a website. I've never used misskey, but I know Mastodon and Plemora both have native desktop and mobile clients. Even in terms of web clients, there are a couple of lovely JS-free ones, my favorite of which is Brutaldon. As far as I know it should also be compatible with Plemora but I've personally never used Plemora. I don't like webapps being required but I am okay with having the option. Optional JS is "fine".

@polarisfm@www.librepunk.club Cool. I actually run a Misskey instance. It has a nice front end in my opinion. It's one of those softwares where either you think it has to much bloat or has a lot of nice features.

@00dani @polarisfm Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into those options. Also, just wondering, what exactly makes cloudflare so bad?

@erinzer04 There are a lot of issues people have with Cloudflare. I'm going to tackle it from a privacy perspective though: Cloudflare, by design, MITMs all the traffic to and from your website. Given the large amount of services Cloudflare has control over, this is very concerning. Its origins are also dubious at best. It was founded and developed by the original "Project Honeypot" team and was inspired by their time on the project.

@polarisfm Ah yeah, that's not good. Does the dns server (1.1.1.1) have the same issues? Are there any good alternatives to that?

@erinzer04 Cloudflare owning the SSL certificates of a website and DNS servers of said websites users is seen a significant risk by me and many others. There's no proof they do anything sketchy with their DNS servers that I know of, but based on their origins and how the "service" is designed it makes it hard to trust other things they do.Alternative DNS will be in the next post, hold on...

@erinzer04 DNS servers (with DNS-over-SSL support) that I like:Cryptostorm: http://cryptostorm.is/dns.txt (run by a trusted VPN provider)NixNet (@amolith)'s DNS servers (with options for adblocking): https://docs.nixnet.services/NixNet_DNSlelux.fi's DNS: https://lelux.fi/resolver/Those are a few personal favorites that I regularly use and approve of, however there are a world of other alternatives. If anyone has any other favorite providers please ping me.

@polarisfm @erinzer04 The admin of lelux.fi is a friend of mine and he mentioned earlier today that a number of his services are down (including the primary DNS server for my domains :meowEyesPout:). I don't know how useable they are at the moment :cirno_shrug: Mine are generally pretty unreliable too though :meowOh: They're running on cheap VPSes from BuyVM and often get a *lot* more traffic than they can handle (see screenshot). I'm hoping to upgrade them soon but they'll have to wait a few months to ensure I have enough to cover both them and the big new server from Hetzner.

@erinzer04 Cloudflare is also incredibly hostile to Tor users (and users of VPNs, even self hosted ones sometimes). It bombards them with captcahs that are half-functional and are far from privacy friendly. Initially it was reCaptcha, then they moved to hCaptcha (which is somehow worse than reCaptcha accessibility wise). In the most irritating of cases it also requires users to wait while it runs arbitrary JS five seconds.

@amolith Dang, alright. Thanks for the heads up. I've been using the Vegas one which is why I didn't noticed too many issues. I also have a Cryptostorm server as a backup. In a way this actually strengthens the argument against relying on a single provider (like Cloudflare). If it's down, it's down.

@polarisfm @erinzer04 @amolith Is there info on cryptostorm's DNS servers on their site anywhere? None of the IPs in that list seem to have 853 open.
