They are putting a good sized battery in the Pinephone keyboard so this could turn it into a great on the go really mini netbook. As long as phone calls aren't important to you.

Maybe as a secondary device that has cell data capability would be useful for lots of people and just carry a separate phone. What I would love is a barebones dumb phone that makes calls and can be a hotspot and has ridiculous battery life. Then I can just carry my Pinephone or other mini computing device and tether and be done with it.

@djsundog Remind me of the plan for that? Are you going to 3d print something that attaches it to the bottom of the Pinephone?

@kelbot that's the hope - I've got the keyboard assemblies and a breakout board I need to solder the SMD port to, then connect that to the sparkfun usb-c arduino board and get it all in a single package.

@kemonine Maybe! You know what I wish someone would replicate with modern processors and features? The Sony Vaio P series that had the pointing stick.

@exquisitecorp Oh yeah, I forgot about the Lightphone! $299 is kind of expensive for a dumb-ish device but not too outrageous. I should look for some reviews on it.

@exquisitecorp It not being a "smartphone" also means it should be a lot easier to keep it for years and years without problem as long as the hardware holds up. Which makes the price not such a big deal.

@kemonine I mean the form factor of the Vaio P series. Being the size of the compact keyboard without the wasted touchpad space.

@kemonine Yeah, the GPD Pocket is the closest I've seen but it misses the key pointing stick feature.

@kelbot i'm considering it too! however, it's much easier for me to find super cheap way old iphones and androids, (and i like the idea of running a linux non-googled phone on one) and i'm generally a "don't buy anything new" kind of person.

@exquisitecorp I try to buy used whenever I reasonably can as well. I was looking at them on ebay. I'm not thrilled with their software setup though. I know its a philosophical choice to make it limited but... They are running android and the only way to sync your contacts is through their dashboard website. So what happens if they go out of business? You can't add contacts to your phone anymore?

@kelbot good tip on the eBay idea. Also, most reviews I found read like promo copy except for the user reports on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/LightPhone/

@kelbot I still use the Sonim XP5700 + Gemini PDA (mostly run termux and userLAnd.) Picked it up for cheap when ATT was clearing them out. It still works well and has a large user-replaceable battery. Apps can also be sideloaded on the XP5700. I have T-UI CLI launcher and alias my shortcuts so my kids don't mess with my phone.
