@fiatjaf So, I wasn't the only one bothered with that.

@fiatjaf I think there's probably a way to build something like nostr on top of Mastodon or Pleroma. The idea would be to use the network effect of the Fediverse.

@fiatjaf In theory, you could use nostr for direct messages too, right?Because there's a way to make nostr catch on faster. Imagine you'd replace Mastodon's sketchy direct messages with nostr. That'd be way better imo.

@verretor @fiatjaf DMs can be implemented on the client side because every user has a pubkey which other clients can encrypt data to before relaying it. Making encrypted dms an event type is in the works.

@verretor @fiatjaf Seems like something lightning would be good for, something like sphinx.chat.

Mastodon is cool, but it has many flaws. Here is an alternative idea that you may be interested in (quite an obvious idea that many people have had, but no one was working on it):https://github.com/fiatjaf/nostr

@jgettbtc @verretor @fiatjaf if there was a Twitter clone that worked like Sphinx Chat, that would be awesome!

@jgettbtc @fiatjaf I think nostr has less dependencies.

@verretor @fiatjaf Is there a potential problem of no incentive to run a relay? Lightning would solve this I think. nostr definitely seems like a promising project

@jgettbtc @fiatjaf Running a relay is probably less demanding than running a Bitcoin node.

@verretor @fiatjaf True. Reducing it to bare essentials is a good design.

@jgettbtc @fiatjaf Yes. There's no reason to have more than text. You can just write the link to an image or video if you want. One could also write html as it's only text.

It’s pretty cool. However, you seem to have never heard of TXT records.

I thought those were just for making Matrix IDs and the like shorter by removing the need for a subdomain. How would that help with putting an instance behind a VPN. Couldn't you just edit the regular A(AAA) record?

@Hyolobrika I did: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nostr/commit/1aebb3911c5cc024a1de24cdc7087790b5c092eeI changed that later because I think normal people are more comfortable with putting a file at their domain root, and tech people are fine either way. Also this way is much easier for service providers to host multiple NIP-05 aliases.Supporting both modes would have been a terrible idea for simplicity reasons.
