Reading and reading it seems Signal is the easiest choice and less painful migration. I don't like so much and I don't trust it but at the moment it is better than Telegram and WhatsApp together.

@jrballesteros05 I kinda agree, what still doesn't convince me is giving my phone number to register. But, yeah is far better than Telegram and WhatsApp together and more mature than Element.

@oscar And it seems to support voice message, my family and friends fucking like that feature, I don't like it so much I'd rather call.

@jrballesteros05 Is there a specific reason why you don't like Signal? I use it as both my SMS app and messaging app on my CalyxOS phone. Just curious in case I have overlooked something

@chip Mainly because is centralized. There is a risk a company like Facebook buy it and We have to switch again. Also because I've just found out about Signal is not in Fdroid despite is open source. https://fosstodon.org/@sotolf/105515196568153601

@oscar I am a bit luckier than you and I feel I don't need whatsapp. Whatsapp became synonym of "Chat" but I don't give a shit. If people want to speak to me they have to use something else.

@jrballesteros05 Totally get the centralized part, yes Telegram is better but to get people to move away from WhatsApp to Telegram is a stretch. Not sure about your F-Droid comment as that is where I downloaded Signal from. The version on F-Droid is 5.0.8 updated 30/12/2020

@jrballesteros05 Given that it is open source wouldn't be great is we could create a spin of it that used the kind of fediverse concept. That way there would be no centralised point of failure

@chip In my case Signal is not in the Fdroid store, I don't know if it used to be but now I can't find it. Telegram is centralized as well and the server is proprietary. The other alternatives are XMPP and Matrix, the first one could be "difficult" for some people and the second one I found it immature. For example, I installed in the beginning of 2020 and I can't recover the old chats.

@jrballesteros05 sorry, just realiised it is included in the 'CalyxOS Local Repository', so in the famous words "it's not you it's me".I don't know if you can add this into your own F-Droid?

@chip CalyxOS is a complete OS. F-droid is a store with open source software. I don't know if I can achieve something like that. In any case I just would install the app from google play, but I didn't like the Signal developer attitude.

@jrballesteros05 @chip There's a fork of Signal called Molly that is available on F-Droid (haven't personally tested it):https://github.com/mollyim/mollyim-androidAlternatively, Signal provides the apk on their site:https://signal.org/android/apk/

@jrballesteros05 @chip My understanding is that since the Signal Foundation is a non-profit, they cannot be bought by another company. There is a good discussion about it here (including the Mozilla Foundation/Corporation situation now):https://teddit.net/r/signal/comments/kbb94c/what_is_signals_business_model/

@jrballesteros05 @chip With Signal being centralized, I have more practical issues, since at least the app itself is open source. The main practical issue being if the servers go down while you're trying to communicate with someone. But for most normies, people are way too familiar/comfortable with centralized services, so it's an easier transition.

@jrballesteros05 I'd rather move to matrix. There are some very good clients, like Element or Fluffychat. It's decentralized and it has a lot of different clients. It also has very good bridges with Telegram and XMPP. That's why I think it's a future proof solution.Signal is non profit, it's centralized and it used (idk if it's still using) Google's recaptcha. They don't allow third party clients. That's why matrix is the best option rn

@chip @jrballesteros05 the matrix protocol can do what you described. It's decentralized and it has various bridges with Telegram, XMPP, etc so it has kind of a fediverse concept

@werwolf @chip I have matrix since April on 2020 because I always though in Pinephone as daily driver phone, I liked Matrix but I don't like Element too much and I also have problems with bridges. For example I was using Element today and Telegram messages didn't come through. I believe Matrix and XMPP are the best options but at least Matrix need to be more mature.

@jrballesteros05 @chip matrix itself is mature. Element isn't that great in my opinion. I always use Fluffychat. The problem is with bridges and no with Matrix itself. My experience chatting with matrix users has been excellent (don't use matrix.org server, it's slow now, that may cause some issues). Another alternatives are Jabber and Briar. But I think that those aren't as polished as matrix or signal

@ndanes @chip Thanks. It is an external repository. I thought it would be in the "officials". I installed the Foss version. I guess I cannot activate signal until I come back to Spain because it needs the phone number.
