Any tiling window manager fans here? I have been using i3 for a couple of months, but would like to dive into a dynamic tiler such as Qtile or xmonad. Any recommendations?#workflow #linux #tiling #desktop

@danebulat Xmonad is pretty good but I don't like it comes with a lot of dependencies. I found Qtile slow but it is easy to configure, especially if you know python.

@jrballesteros05 Haskell is certainly a large dependency at just under 300MB, but I also want a fast tiler. Think I'll give Xmonad a shot! 😃

@danebulat i3 is dynamic as well. :) I've been using i3 for about 5 years myself. If you want to try something else, then bspwm is also good.

@danebulat I don't know anything bout Haskell but with xmonad I really want to learn. I found xmonad very flexible to configure.

@hund @danebulat I3 is not dynamic in the way he means, as in following the layout automatically, it is however a great manager, and has gotten into a great spot now where they have frozen the features, so that nothing will change from under you. bspwm is the one I've been in love with the last week, it's so much fun, it's very stable, and at least with how I want it to, everything just works right it also supports automatic tiling with the bsp-layout script.

@sotolf @danebulat I didn't know he meant a dynamic one with preset layouts. :)

@hund @danebulat since he mentioned "like qtile and xmonad" at least that's what I assumed since they both use that paradigm :) I think I'm still in the honey moon phase with bspwm personally now and I love it, it's like a mix of i3 and the automatic tilers in the way it does things, fits me well. I3 is so great for a set and forget wm if you don't want/need the other features, it's just solid and runs great.

@sotolf @danebulat Frozen features? What makes you think that?

@hund @danebulat https://www.reddit.com/r/i3wm/comments/kn8pa2/an_update_on_the_future_of_i3/They won't accept any more feature requests, and won't implement more features. to battle feature creep, I think this is a good thing just to be clear.

@hund @danebulat automatic/dynamic, which means bspwm through an external script can do the layout thing that the non-manual tilers do. Other features, such as terminal swallowing, gaps, exchange with biggest node and so on. Bspwm just is more scriptable, with all the pros and cons that it brings along.

@sotolf @danebulat Any scriptable window manager can do that, dynamic and manual.Swallow is possible with i3: https://github.com/jamesofarrell/i3-swallowi3-gaps support gaps and swapping clients.Try harder next time. ;)

@sotolf @danebulat "Therefore, we have decided to take an official stance that we're happy with the feature set of i3, and that new features will generally only be considered if they can either be implemented without further configuration/commands (and without being a breaking change, of course), or if they are so fundamentally beneficial that they outweigh the cost they add to the project."This is not them not accepting new features. :P

@hund @danebulat I'm not sure what you think I'm saying, I repeatedly said i3 is great for what it does...Try harder with what now? I don't get why you're being so defensive for some reason. You can do whatever you want with any wm if you're set enough onto it.

@hund @danebulat No, and it's not a big change from what was "de facto" the stance from before. As I said it's a good stance to limit feature creep.

@sotolf @danebulat I don't consider me being defensive, I'm just trying to make i3 justice when you're not doing it. You're constantly dismissing i3 as mediocre and that makes me sad.

@sotolf @danebulat That's why I have always liked i3. They have always taken it slow. Less is more and worse is better. :)

@hund @danebulat I don't get how saying it's a great wm, and really good at what it does is dismissing it as mediocre, one of the only reasons I don't use it is that it doesn't support the way I'm working, which is all I've said about it that can be considered as objectively "bad" but only as far as "for me"

@sotolf @hund @hund @sotolf Ok guys, thanks for the input. I've made up my mind and will try xmonad next. As a programmer, I think learning some Haskell and seeing how it compares with other languages will be fun too. 👍

@danebulat @hund as long as you're willing to have the bloated buildchain on your machine it's supposed to be a good one. so yeah, I don't see what convinced you though :p

@sotolf @danebulat @hund when I tried to use xmonad I had problems with xmobar being really slow
