A £320,000 #bicycle lane in #London was used by 4000 cyclists a day. About 300 people complained so council ripped it off to ease congestion. The result? The lane is blocked by parked cars 80% of the time, and congestion... has increased.https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/jan/01/removed-london-bike-lane-blocked-by-parked-cars-most-of-the-time-study-kensington-and-chelsea-councilThere will always be (loud) complaints from motorists when infrastructure makes it safer and easier for people wanting to use active transport. Here’s another example of _everyone_ being worse off when a council listens to them only.

In my suburb, a wonderful plan to make a street (that I cycle on with my kids sometimes) safer for everyone (pedestrian crossings, lower speed limit, full-length bike lanes...) has been cancelled because of motorist feedback (a few parking spots were going to go away). Some people were _so_ against it that they spent money printing mind-numbing plastic signs saying stuff like “Dornoch terrace is an avenue, not a velodrome”...Seriously?? My blood still boils.

@setthemfree @stragu In Brussels a general region wide #30km/hour has been installed. The car drivers are petitioning like crazy against it. This is so weird.. Climate change? Sports are good for you? 💨 💨💨💨💨Empathy Stragu. Look at Grenoble and Helsinki as peers. Denmark and the Netherlands where bikes rule.We have started multiple soft mobility citizen groups and we have the green party with finally some weight in the political scales.. The citizen groups do help. I have some contacts if you want to share over-oceanic practices. Here's an article with some good arguments lined up (in Dutch: https://www.bruzz.be/mobiliteit/een-algemene-zone-30-invoeren-als-tandpijn-die-plots-verdwijnt-2020-12-09 )- - - keep up the pressure..
