I finally got through all the Lord of the Rings movies. I mean, I was also playing civilization and minecraft at the time, but I got most of it.I have so many questions. Like for one, if Gandalf knows wizard magic or whatever, why didn't he just have the ring destroyed day 1?I don't know, seems kinda lazy of Gandalf to do that to the hobbit man.

@ElfLord I think the point there might have been that the only way to destroy the ring was to take it to where it was forged, and that the movement had to be so below-the-radar that someone seemingly lowly and unimpressive had to take it there on foot.Sauron would expect his most powerful enemies to either attempt to destroy it themselves, or fall temptation to using its power. He definitely would have noticed the eagles carrying Frodo to Mt Doom also.

@sean @ElfLord Yea that’s one of the reasons given. But Gandalf is also afraid of the temptation. I don’t remember if this was in the movies or just the books, but he knows the ring would tempt him into using it to defeat Sauron but the ring’s evil would overcome him.He also has a mandate to not interfere. When he’s Gandalf the Gray, his role is to inspire, not lead. It’s only when he becomes Gandalf the White that he start taking action on his own.

@sean @ElfLord I thought more the corruption aspect. By holding onto it for 30yrs without being influenced by the ring Frodo was the safe bet. Plus if they'd gone by horse Frodo had them jockey skills from Secretariat, right?

@sean Thank you for your thoughtful response :) Whew, sounds like a lot of work. Just give into evil, man. Sounds easier.
