"Many modern applications are Easy to Use. Netflix is Easy to Use. Facebook is, for all it’s faults, pretty easy to use. The iPhone, the iPad, and ChromeOS are super easy to use.Well, they are easy to use as long as you use them in the prescribed way. As long as you let them tell you what you want to do, instead of the other way around."@ajroach42 http://ajroach42.com/observations-on-modern-computing-the-last-10-years-were-a-misstep/

@alcinnz @ajroach42 Interesting article. I agree with most parts, except about the computer needing to be user-hardware-moddable -- I think of it like cars, instead.I don't want most users to be able to mod their cars. :P But literally every other point (doing what you want, with the least amount of power, not sharing data) applies just the same.

@mdm @alcinnz Consider that the alternative to allowing computers to be end user modifiable is to make them unrepairable, or only repairable by licensed techs. Repair-ability is essential.

@ajroach42 @alcinnz Or, one other options: to make them so cheap, efficient, and ubiquitous that one doesn't even need to repair them!40 years ago computers cost thousands of dollars, and were large. There were lots of things that could constantly go wrong, and one needed to repair them.Today, computers are the size of my thumb, and cost $5. (I'm currently coding on a Raspberry Pi Zero). If it breaks, I'm not going to think about fixing it; I'm just going to buy another.

@mdm @ajroach42 @alcinnz the low cost of computers today is due in large part to predatory and abusive labor practices, and ecological devastation. your computer is cheap for you, but the system that produces cheap computers comes at great cost.

@redoak @mdm @ajroach42 @alcinnz doubly so for phones (even 'cheaper' and less repairable). With an open hardware platform and less proprietary software (where a lot of the extra cycles go to either unnecessarily eye candy or, worse, feature bloat - think of all those FB's A/B tests - and worst, surveillance) - we can keep hardware functional for much longer.

@mdm @alcinnz "computer" today includes cars, tractors, refrigerators, and microwaves Throwing away a mechanically sound tractor because it has a non-user-serviceable computer inside it is not a good idea.
