@mike Yep. All depends on the company -- Microsoft takes it upon itself to release security updates for Windows; Apple does the same for iPhones. (I've heard this is partially why an iPhone and copy of windows "costs more."For the Android world the responsibility of updates falls upon: "who knows?" Google? The OEM? The cell carrier? Has anybody ever actually figured it out?(Not who it's _supposed_ to be, but who actually is pushing out updates on time.)

@mike I forgot one on the Android chain of responsibility: the "Open Handset Alliance", of course.

@signalstation I was about to say "welcome back" to you and then realized you hadn't gone anywhere, and I actually think I've lost track of time and there are large parts of the day when I still think it's March.

@msh @ajroach42 And that's why I have to love iOS devices. Don't get slower with age. Just gifted an iPhone 6 (with a small crack in the screen) to an older relative for free, to replace the buggy, pile of crap android device they were using. Their Android phone was so buggy and slow they could barely send text messages -- the iPhone 6 is fast and quick as the day it was made. They're apparently loving it.

@fribbledom I have a bigger question that no one else has seemed to ask...But how much of a problem is C02 concentration in your residence? 😯 Like, this is literally something I've never thought about.

@alcinnz @ajroach42 Interesting article. I agree with most parts, except about the computer needing to be user-hardware-moddable -- I think of it like cars, instead.I don't want most users to be able to mod their cars. :P But literally every other point (doing what you want, with the least amount of power, not sharing data) applies just the same.

@ajroach42 @alcinnz Or, one other options: to make them so cheap, efficient, and ubiquitous that one doesn't even need to repair them!40 years ago computers cost thousands of dollars, and were large. There were lots of things that could constantly go wrong, and one needed to repair them.Today, computers are the size of my thumb, and cost $5. (I'm currently coding on a Raspberry Pi Zero). If it breaks, I'm not going to think about fixing it; I'm just going to buy another.

@ajroach42 Sadly, the best answer is probably... "the cloud". Let someone else handle the format, since they'll be doing their own upgrades of equipment/storage medium.

@ajroach42 Sure -- we could all do our own versions of the cloud better and cheaper. But then you're functioning as you're own IT department, and what happens when you're gone? I could create documentation out the wazoo for how I store things, but my family (or executors of my literary estate) wouldn't be able to do the first thing to restore it. They're not nerds, like me.

@ajroach42 As I saw someone put it very well about cloud storage:"Don't think of it as offloading these tasks onto someone else. Think of it as pooling your resources with other people who want to archive data, and hiring someone whose sole job is to do it for everyone."

@ajroach42 @djsumdog I guess you could start calling yourself the "First Church of the Maker." Then they wouldn't give you so much shit about people sleeping there.

@poindexter @msh @ajroach42 An iPhone 6S? It definitely is. It's even still on Apple's "supported" listed and is getting regular iOS updates. (That's six years of updates, so far.)I can't think of an Android phone that got more than 2. Maybe 3, at most.

@dazinism @msh @poindexter @ajroach42 I don't trust any of these companies to actually follow through with these promises -- I make my opinions of them based upon their actual past behavior, which, for updates, hasn't been great.I don't believe Apple is supporting phones for longer than everyone else out of the goodness of their hearts (it's possibly just because their hardware is similar in between models), but the fact remains that nobody else even comes close.

@clive Basically a 10k bit number system (if I'm understanding that correctly). Very interesting.

@clive @vegetablegremlin The same way we do with only 10 digits -- you would just start a new number right next to it, on the left. :)

@PCMag A decent article, made readable through adblock. I don't know how regular people read articles like this with an ad every other paragraph. :\ Whatever happened to just ads on the side, or at the bottom of an article?

@futurebird I can speak from personal experience at my shop that the push to "find a use case for Copilot, *any* use case" reached a fever pitch in November/December.Definitely there's A) some MS reps pushing their clients to find use cases (because MS's sales numbers for Copilot subs were down for the year), combined with B) clients really wanting to justify the cost they spent on existing Copilot subs.
