I have a newfound respect for streamers. Set up my camera with OBS, connected to #owncast. Doesn't work, it keeps reconnecting. Then I tried #Twitch, which does work, but the video looks super choppy. Not sure how to fix that.

@Gina I had the reconnecting bug too. Are you using the docker version with the template config?

@Gina Been streaming 24/7 over a decade now, and it can be a royal pain to get this set up correctly. Having a fast enough home internet connection is most important, then using the streaming settings that your host recommends.x264 encoder, with a variable bit rate and 1200 kbps bitrate gives a nice smooth stream for my goats running around.

@Gina I don't use a camera myself, so limited experience. But you could try to stream something other than the camera and see whether that is choppy as well. If so then it's a problem with the encoding or connection, otherwise it likely has something to do with the camera.

@GoatsLive What type of internet connection do you have? I'm currently stuck with about 25mbps download and 8 mbps upload. I wonder if its even possible to stream with these speeds.

@Gina I'd say it's your upload speed that's causing you the most grief. I have FIOS fibre to the farm, with 100/100 up/down (though I could go as high as a gigabit if I was willing to pay for it.Do a speed test to see what your upload speed "actually" is, and it's likely slower than advertised.https://www.speedtest.net/

@Gina @GoatsLive totally possible. I’ve live-streamed with as little as 1-3MB up. You’ve gotta make sure the resolution, bitrate and codec are small enough for your connection to handle. You could probably at least do 720p30 at a decent bitrate so there isn’t tearing or pixelation. Bonus points if you can stream H265/HEVC to ingest server, because that’s way more lightweight for the same quality as H264.

@Gina @GoatsLive as GoatsLive says the upload is the issue. And they are more knowledgeable about FOSS software. I personally have issues with variable bitrate and my capture software and have found better results from constant rates. Good luck!

@Gina You can toggle the advanced setting on the output>streaming tab. You will have to play around there to find the sweet spot. I'd suggest you get a good mic, something like a lav or a shotgun. Poor video can pass, but poor audio makes people leave immediately. It's how our brains work, and radio tech has been around too much for people to put up with bad audio.A good idea when having limited upload (like I do with my OfflineNL subscription) is to put the stream on a couple minutes delay. Youtube can be set up for that easily. I don't know about Twitch, but I'm sure you can manage. If you want to spend a couple thousand eurobucks, hit me up for gear recommendation for video and audio recording. :P If you just wanna rabbit-hole on your own, look up the GH5.

@Gina Ah I see you have a camera already (a6400 from the look of it?). Git a nice shotgun for it though. Audio from that thing is not great. Rode has nice stuff around 400 euros. And you might want to check Olive as an alternative to KdenLive. It's still alpha, but for small scale work (no multiple sources of video/audio) it might be more intuitive and more enjoyable to work with. Open source.

@egret thanks! A good mic is the only thing I still need, will look into it (but damn €400 rip my wallet).

@Gina Yeah, this shit can get expensive fast. Pray you never get into bird photography. 400 euros is like half the price of a CHEAP teleobjective. You treat your gear well and it barely loses from its resale value (glass sells around 95% MSRP, good audio gear similarly), so in case you lose interest you regain much of your investment. That's what I keep telling myself anyway.
