@kev I would say it's quite possible but you need to do more research. Look at their privacy policy, reviews from other tech/privacy sources, and FAQ or other resources they have on their site.

@kevNeocities.org are very good, ethical, with free accounts and their 'supporter' tier is 5$ per month.

@kev I'm not sure it matters. No matter where you go, the host will always be able to gather demographic data, since it's hitting their servers. The only reasonably privacy-respecting method would be to self-host on gear you own, but that's got its own raft of downsides, and may not be possible to do at home without co-locating.

@kev Is it any different to using a free tier of a CDN supplier? If it allows you to do what you want, and doesn't impose barriers for what you might want to do in the future, then why not?I self-host a lot of stuff but it does bother me that if I were run over by a bus my family could never maintain my services.Perhaps letting a third party host stuff for you isn't a bad idea. If it's free just look for catches.

Poking around with VPS is fun and great experience. But I am not gonna tell you to replace an already fine working system. Instead I suggest you to try building and hosting your site on VPS under test.kevq.uk subdomain. If all goes fine and you want to make the switch, you should change DNS and update https certificate. If things go wrong, your site will be untouched.@kev

@kev no, you are not. That quote is too general to apply to everything. For example, for basically all FOSS software, you are not the product

@kev Maybe, maybe not. If you don't trust people who do you favors, who will you trust? Also, refine your question. There's no explicit danger in "being a product", just like people don't literally die from old age. They're old, and therefore they fall down. If you're the product, therefore...

@nathand yeah true, but I’m concerned that this could be more prevalent on a free account (I have no idea if it is).

@neildarlow it’s no different than using a free CDN, but I wouldn’t do that. That’s why this makes me uncomfortable.

@kev I don’t think you are the product in this case. You’re just putting yourself at risk of disappointment later when they realise they can’t afford to subsidise the free users - and I’m not sure that even matters much with a static site. Easy enough to plonk it somewhere else.

@binyamin that’s a great point . Let be more specific then. My concern is that they’re a business; they exist to make money. If they’re not making money from my bank account, how are they making money from me?

@kev That's an interesting point. I know some of the paid tiers include full audit logs, more monthly build time, GDPR-compliant analytics, and password-protected pages/sites. My gut feeling is that they market towards freelancers who use Netlify for all of their clients. Also, see this quora answer https://qr.ae/pNZjCr

@kev I read that a bit wrong. They're not getting money from you personally. They're trying to be nice to you, so you become a customer in the future. Also, according to the Quora answer it's pretty cheap for them.

@kev I'm not sure I understand but if you use Jekyll and you have your own vps why don't you push the "compiled" version to your own webserver and forget about all the rest?

@kev I've been using Hugo + Gitlab + Netlify for a while on the free tier as well. I haven't had any complaints, but I think it's fair to be cautious and have a plan B when their sales model changes.

@kev I know @jamie mentioned something similar, but how is Netlify trying to make money and pay back their investors?According to Crunchbase(https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/netlify/company_financials) they have raised $91.7 million. How do they plan to pay them back?Make enough from customers? Go to IPO / stock? This is something I have been thinking more about when I use products and services, how are they making money and pay back their investors?

@kev If you already have a functioning VPS somewhere I don't understand why you would ever want to sign up for some free service with terms and conditions and no guarantees. 1. Install nginx with the most basic of configurations2. Clone you git repository on the server.3. White a five line `post-receive` git hook that clones the repo in `/tmp`, runs the command to create a site and copies the result to the webfolder.4. There is no 4. Take a beer, smile and continue with your day.
