#Google demonstrates once again, that you should probably own your own data, and certainly not leave it up to "free" services. Storage is storage. One should not have to open a bin of photos every two years, unless you want someone to come into your home to throw it away. What does Google care if we look at something or not? Use #Nextcloud to host your own storage, put things on a backup drive, burn CDS, use flash storage, etc for longterm storage in a private and secure way.

@theprivacyfoundation let me know when you find a VPS host that charges you 0$ a month.most places i've run code on don't care if you are active or not so long as the cheque clears.

@theprivacyfoundation I agree ideologically, but having tried to do this recently the costs are immense.

@dajbelshaw@theprivacyfoundationWhy? I did this a couple of months ago. The cost was $50 for Raspberry Pi, $100 for 1TB USB drive and that's all.

@VikingKong @theprivacyfoundation Which is fine if either:a) You spend your entire life at homeb) You're willing to make devices on your home network accessible to the wider worldNeither of the two apply to me.

@dajbelshaw @VikingKong You could also access your nextcloud server using a VPN. You can access it from anywhere and you don’t need to open up the service to be publicly reachable. @theprivacyfoundation

@robby @VikingKong @theprivacyfoundation So basically be a sysadmin? Is this a reasonable thing to be suggesting that everyone do? 🙄

@dajbelshaw @robby @VikingKong @theprivacyfoundation yeah. More people need to take it upon themselves to learn this. Otherwise, they're relegating themselves to serfdom in a world in which tech facility (all of which can freely be learned, without permission, by anyone with an internet connected device) separates the haves & have-nots. In the past, when few were literate, we had the Dark Ages. We're there again... but many privileged folk remain righteously ignorant... at their own peril.

@dajbelshaw @robby @VikingKong @theprivacyfoundation at the very least, the techno-indifferent (who nevertheless depend on technology for almost everything) need to organise themselves to collaborate with those in their community/family who *do* feel the desire to learn this stuff, to have their help. Outsourcing to corporate interests is ultimately suicidal.

Outsourcing to corporate interests is now clearly (to anyone who's been paying attention) a very very bad idea.

@dajbelshaw @robby @VikingKong @theprivacyfoundation The concentrations of largely unregulated autocratic power & influence that have resulted from our blithe tech-ignorance may well be the single greatest existential threat our species (and planet) faces.

@dajbelshaw @robby @VikingKong @theprivacyfoundation I'm concerned for anyone who isn't completely creeped out by this: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/technology/techs-frightful-five-theyve-got-us.html
