The concept of pretending that something like Santa is more than just a fun story is mind boggling to me

@lain they laughed at the wright brothers when they told the unwashed masses that they will make the air plane, they laughed at graham bell when he told the contactless peasants that he will invent the iphone, and now they laugh at santa prophets when they tell the giftless masses about santayour spiel is running short, mister

@ocean @lain I agree. My spouse and I both had some weird feels towards the idea, but it still felt like a small glimmer of good in this shit world that we didn't want to fully deprive our kids of. Zero religion though, neither of us had an ounce of positive feels from ever having that thrust upon us as kids.

@lain joseph campbell talk"""And my wonderful friend, whom I regard now as my <ultimate?> teacher uh Heinrich Zimmer, great great indologist. I spent 12 years editing his uh posthum<unintelligible>. He used to say, that uh, the best things can't be told. The second best are misunderstood. The second best are references to the best, which are misunderstood because they're not understood as references to something beyond speech, but as references to facts. So they're misread. And, to turn it into a simple, grammatical statement, the uh connotation of the metaphor is forgotten and lost, and one reads it in terms of the denotation.[...]it's as though you would go into a restaurant, pick up the menu, and begin eating the parts of it that you thought you wanted. Uhm, it's *losing* the *message* in the *message*. Or, or you're on an automobile trip and you're trying to go to Boston, so you come to a sign that says Boston, hah, well here we are."""
