I'm kicking around this idea that, when learning a new programming language, it is more helpful to start with examples of things that one should *not* do, rather than what one *should* do.My logic here is that the things you *can* do in a language are effectively infinite, however what you *can't* (or shouldn't) do is a very finite and relatively manageable number.Obviously at some point you learn how to do things correctly, but I'm curious if this method lessens the initial pre-grok haze.

Does this seem logical? Would love some feedback from my fedi friends with more programming experience (virtually all of you ha).

@ScumbagDog For example, watching a video like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0_u26Vpb4wIt not only shows you bad patterns (some obvious and universal) but it also helps you grok why things aren't done a certain way. I always hate the feeling I get learning something new and I'm just repeating a pattern because "it's just done that way". You obviously can't understand the entire history of every convention and pattern when you're new, and that blind following of things is what I'm trying to minimize.

@ScumbagDog I agree with everything you said, but I am assuming this is a person's N+1 language being learned - so general concepts would already be grok'd. Do you thing that makes a significant difference? I'm also dyslexic, so I always have a hard time learning anything new at all, and I tend to not learn well with traditional methods that work for most people. So what works for me here may not be anything close universal, ha

Any anime suggestions that have a bit less of the 'appealing to 13yo boys' stereotype so heavily woven in to their otherwise good plots?

@essie I bought a couple of cheaper bulbs, so it may just be the software sucks... but always seems like a hassle to use them with an app. It's only cool when you get to show someone new who doesn't yet know how stupid you were to buy them :P

@essie oh in that case maybe try led strips and arduino? There are several phone apps to control them. You can get enough to deck out a room for less than one of the higher end rgb bulbs

@katie I selected bio-metric chips... but honestly I'm not 100% opposed. However, the implementation would have to be open, ethical, and put the full control of privacy on the individual with no exception.I think the technology could create positives on par with vaccines, however it has to be done properly and with no capitalist/commercial interests involved... which I realize is nigh impossible :\

@ocean @lain I agree. My spouse and I both had some weird feels towards the idea, but it still felt like a small glimmer of good in this shit world that we didn't want to fully deprive our kids of. Zero religion though, neither of us had an ounce of positive feels from ever having that thrust upon us as kids.

Since I've been out of the 3D printing game for a couple of years - what is considered the best affordable bed leveling solution these days?I recently got my old i3 knock-off back in shape and running with an Orange Pi using Octoprint. It's working quite decently, but manual bed leveling is already taking the wind out of my sails.Don't get me wrong, I can do it just fine but it's wearing on me doing it nearly every heat/cool cycle.#3dprinting #3dprintAny advice is greatly appreciated!

I hate living in a world where most humans focus more on their phones than the people that are attempting to spend time with them...

@Nikolai_Kingsley @spacehorse I can understand that maybe this mentality is perceived as something like juvinoia or some kind of backwards thinking, but in my mind this situation is only beneficial if humans are communicating more effectively, and that just isn't the case... Humans are just becoming more isolated in echo chambers and this is preventing us from forming anything more than superficial connections or solving any real problems. This might be evolution, but an erasure not a selection.

The "btw, I use Arch" meme has been eclipsed by the "btw, I distro shame to feel superior" meme.I'm not saying the original meme wasn't justified years ago; it certainly was ...but it's dead now! If you still go around shitting on people every time they mention Arch Linux in a post YOU HAVE BECOME THE INVERTED ZOMBIE CORPSE OF THAT ORIGINAL MEME!Have some self awareness and find some fresh memes! And consider that you don't need to shit on people to feel good about your choices.
