How Suburban Development Makes American Cities PoorerFor centuries, cities followed a common pattern of development, that can be seen in the design of cities all around the world. This pattern was not accidental or even inevitable, but came about over years of evolution. In the mid 20th century, America threw out all that, and started down a drastically different path - the Suburban Experiment.#US #Canada #Cities #Infrastructure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVUeqxXwCA0

@stux Yeah remember to keep your town independent and have a strong community, nothing can really replace that

@stuxThis isn't long to watch and it's something I've agreed with for a long time.Investment in and improvement of existing infrastructure is better for everyone than razing everything and sprawling out.You end up with people too remote and empty, useless, and pretty unattractive box buildings spread all over My city has wonderful, thriving examples of urban redevelopment that's already outlasting and outperforming newer, suburban retail.

@TonyStark I’m glad your city does! This issue makes people also car dependent.. A while ago I saw a video from this same channel about how parents always need to drive their kids everywhere until there 16 and can get their own car which is insane! The kids here just walk or take a bike which is so much more free and safe😃 Kids go out in the city on there own from like 6-7 years old, works perfectly! The first thing I look for when buying a house is the closest store haha!

@stuxThat's how I grew up, or taking a train or a bus if it was a little further. So much better for the world.

@stux @TonyStark Here people use motorcycles and scooters as most can't afford cars. Also cars are too big for small Indian streets filled with people.

@stux @TonyStark Electric cars or bikes don't make much breakthrough here mainly because the infrastructure is not present to support it. Motorcycles here are not limited to just local travel but people travel hundreds of kilometres using them, moreover they give very good mileage and are low maintenance. Cycles are not much of a good option for long travel. Here vehicle has to be multi-purpose and cheap.

@stux Interesting video. This is the consequence of letting central planners make development decisions. Where I live, mixed-use development is rarely allowed outside of urban areas and villages, and where it is allowed, it tends to be limited and unsuccessful. Worth noting: I see a similar trend when I visit Europe, particularly France. The giant parking lot around Carrefour is full of cars every time I'm there. No different than my nearby Walmart, except of course the cheese selection.

@curt I find it so weird that there are whole area's where people live but no simple supermarket in sight! :blobcatgiggle: I have moved several times now and at one point I use to live on the top floor above a supermarket, how convenient!

@stux Other than in the most densely populated urban areas, the independent supermarket seems to be a thing of the past. I'm lucky to have a supermarket from a small, local chain within walking distance, but with all the competition it faces from global players, who knows how much longer it'll last.

@stux @TonyStark Also one big reason behind lesser cycles is the public status. Motorcycles are seen superior to cycles or people will think you are cheap, same with cars they represent someone's wealth and power.

@stux @TonyStark I'm childfree and have no idea how to raise kids, but I can say that as someone who grew up in a time when child abductions were shockingly common, I don't know if kids of age 6 or 7 would fare too well on their own here. I do agree that more public transportation and walkable cities are needed.

@TonyStark @stux NC is still hung up on car culture, but more forms of public transit are developing in the cities. It's not just that everything is spread out and bus lines only go so far. There are also class and race issues in the mix. I think people here have tended to think that public transportation is for people who can't afford cars. The state was heavily rural since colonial times up until the 20th century; in many areas it still is. Even in cities, we're playing catchup.

@TonyStark @stux I know that might make us sound like a bunch of country bumpkins, but I just want to give a different perspective on why some places have so much sprawl.

@stux @TonyStark Maybe so. In some places it's just that the growth happened too fast or was poorly planned, or both. I think sometimes it's because there were corporate shenanigans holding up the construction for a long time.

@stux @TonyStark In the '70s-'80s there was a string of child abductions and murders in the USA that led to things like milk carton ads for missing children (predating Amber alerts), teaching stranger danger, and what's often called helicopter parenting. I'm old enough that my parents never did the helicopter thing, but I well remember the milk cartons and being taught never to take candy from strangers, never get in a vehicle with strangers, etc.
